My name is Lynne, and I'm a student in Chicago. I'm working odd jobs right now to pay for school, and have taken up doing children's parties on weekends (I started doing this when a magician didn't show up to work at our preschool and my boss had a magic kit in her office. I think I had more fun than the kids looking through it and figuring it out.).
I'm also a belly dancer and do both dancing and magic for adult audiences (nothing blue!). Although I go by "sinful lynne" for my adult shows, I'm trying to go more into children's magic. After spending hours on google, I have yet to come up with a good name for myself that says "kids". Any ideas? My character is kind of like a "fairy", but not overly colorful or silly...more gypsy-esque. Glad to be here! I love working with kids and am hoping to stop doing so many evening shows as it's killing my GPA. I'd rather work kid's shows on weekend days and at the preschool during the week and go to school at night. So I figure, who better to ask than the pros here? My friend at work told me her husband is here..but he's into mentalism or something. Anyway, glad to have found this place! Lynne |

Looney Lynne? I look at you and it is hard for me, you look serious! Are you silly, funny, serious with kids? I am trying to give you a good one, yes? Please help me there with what you do.

How about "Miss Lynne"? It's got the assonant thing that Sinful Lynne has going on, and it also sounds like something elementary school kids would call the teacher.

If you look like your picture you are a godess, if not suely a royal princess!
Princess Parties are a big thing with lots of potential. How about establishing a character and then creating a name for that character? Focus on a venue "All Girl Party" and make them magicial. Can't be tinkerbell, that's taken. "Starlight" the magical fairy.

First off Lynne you are a female, which means a great many people here are confused by you since they have never really talked to a 'girl'. I, on the other hand, am not scared. I was going to go with Miss Lynne myself because as Lobowolf, which in Spanish would be Wolflobo, pointed out is what kids call teachers, Miss Lynne, Miss Susan etc.. Sure it has that S & M ring to it but still. Also there is nothing wrong with The Magic of Lynne.

Oh, go ahead and keep it ... what 10-year-old boy wouldn't far prefer an entertainer like "Sinful Lynne" to some goofy clown?
Seriously, how about "I can come as 'Princess Lynne' to make your daughter [alt: 'your daughter and all her friends'] a real princess on her special day, or as 'Amazing Lyndini' if you're having boys too." |

I like the ideas! I agree about the Princess party ideas (thank you for the compliment, Mr. Michaels! My avatar is from my photo shoot two years ago. It's my head shot that I use for my "sinful lynne" adult shows. Keep in mind, I'm wearing makeup and they do touch up photos. I only wish I could maintain that every day!) and for the boys parties. I've had requests from two moms at our school to do 'Princess Tea Parties' with magic and storytelling so far...so I really appreciate the help and the brainstorms!
I guess I do have a question, who is Jolly Roger? I don't think I'm dressing up as a man anytime soon! Lynne |

Hi,
I am a student as well, although I grew up in the magic business. You can check out what I do at http://www.princesslexiloo.com But please, don't go into princess parties if that's not where your passion is. We have enough people that thought it would be quick and easy to throw on a Cinderella costume. I'm not saying that is what you are thinking about doing but please be careful with choosing. For me, I am "into" princesses just like a little girl is, I have a disney princess wallet, a pink bedspread, etc. I like the idea of the gypsy/fairy, to me you have a very "bewitching" and "mystical" look. What is your target age group for children? Alexa |

You are a pretty smart young girl. There are so many clowns that think clowning is giving out stickers, and playing dressup. You apperently do more than that, good for you. We don't live too far apart, and we will meet some day.

Hi Alexa (yeah, another girl!);)
I like the ages between 5 and 10. I'm not wanting to "jump" into anything, but I do want to research and see where I fit into the princess concept. I also feel very comfy with my gypsy-fairy theme..and wonder if I can't tie it into something with a "gypsy tea party" so it's my own thing. Even tonight I'm leaning towards "Crystalynne" as a name, what do you think of it? It's been very interesting to look throught the Café tonight..although I really should be doing more homework! What's with the "Fur Real Pets on Sticks" with the "Axtell" animated animals? they look very pricey for what they are, so I'm assuming I'm missing something. Alexa, do you ever make your own props? I've been visiting Hobby Lobby a lot lately and made a great "princess-y" looking square circle! It's in pink silk, pearls and lace. I've used it twice now and it gets them every time! I've been producing some of my story items from it. The children really enjoy it. Hobby Lobby had a serious of silk gift boxes out for Valentine's Day and I bought them on clearance...a nest of 3 for $5.00! I wanted to thank Dennis for the compliments, but since I'm new I want to be a real "straight shooter". I'm only 23..so I'm old enough to be some people's daughter here..and some people's granddaughter! I'm really glad you like my photo, though, and your compliments are appreciated! Well, off to "belly dance" I go! What a cold night to wear such a sheer costume! Goodnight! |

Lynne,
I'd guess that since you're already a belly dancer, you probably have a lot of Arabian-type costumes & know a lot about that look. Every woman I've seen do "Princess Parties" dresses like a Disney princess, which is European - they'd live in a castle in England, Austria or Germany. You could start with your Arabian theme instead. This would set you apart from everyone who thinks of the obvious idea. By picking a theme like this, it's easy to figure out what props you would use, what kind of music, what kind of stories to tell, etc. If you wanted a puppet as a sidekick, it would be fun to have a camel. And so on. Hope this is helpful. Jeff |

First impression--you remind of the good witch of the north in the Wizard of Oz. I think her name was Glinda. So how about Glynne the Good Witch of the Windy City? Seriously though, I think a "good" witch character would be intriguing and comforting to children. Best of luck to you!
PS Will you teach my wife how to belly dance?

Lyndel... Too funny. I'd like to see you belly dancing. On second thought... no, I wouldn't. How about a good polka?

I think Crystalynne would fit you. I am glad to see that you are doing your homework before jumping into anything. That type of dedication and commitment to the art will get you going far.

I would stick with Sinful Lynne. It's memorable.
Have you considered a costume of shiny PVC or possibly latex? I don't suppose the children would be bothered but it would be good marketing as every father in Chicago would be trying to book you for their children's party. And those that don't have children would be borrowing someone else's just for the fun of it. You could be become a one woman Chicago Catalyst for children's entertainers!

Thank you Mr. Bill for your compliment! I am really trying to do research, much of it here, before I just jump in to do children's parties and celebrations. Waking up this morning and looking at my outfits I think "Crystalynne" will fit just fine with what I've already been doing with the gypsy/fairy theme.
Mr. Tony, I'm not sure if you were joking around or not, but I do have to tell you that I took your comments a little on the male-chauvenist side of things. As a belly dancer we may wear some very scanty costumes, many are gauzy and for the adults the top is almost see through...but we're not considered exotic dancers in the same way that a...well, one of "those girls" is. I don't even want to name the types of dancers here in a children's section. I don't think it's right. Belly Dancing has a very old history that I'm very proud of. I've also been belly dancing since I was 13, so I've put a lot of myself into it over the years and take what I do very seriously. Speaking of fathers in Chicago, last night at the restaurant I worked in there was a man who tried to grab me right in front of his son. I don't know if he was showing off or just too tempted. I think sometimes that men (please don't take offense to this) are simply so saturated by the filth they see on television that they simply think they can grab whatever body part they want. I was very embarassed for his son, who looked like he wanted to die. His wife was gone to the ladies room at the time. I think one of his friends told her about the incident and before their party left the VIP room last night she came up to apologize as I was leaving. The best part was that the restaurant cook, Ramon, who I was going to drop off at his house on the way home (guys, don't go there!) knew about it and gave the man who grabbed me a look that made this jerk go pale. It almost made me laugh out loud. The whole scenario, and the fact that I have to get up early today to work on a paper for school, is one of the reason that I want out of working these kinds of parties. The men are grabby. They can't handle the hip movements, I think, at least not in person. I would much rather walk into a room of children and know that I'll be looked at not as a slab of meat, but as a person! I also dearly love teaching during my day job and really like to make children laugh, too. Well, that's this girl's rant for the day! Lynne |
