Here's a link to P&T's site specifically the 'Teller Speaks' page which has a number of his essays. One essay written and posted in May 2002 titled 'Silverfish' describes the creative process behind bringing the presentation to life.

Tony, thanks for sharing the essay. It gives an insight to how the "Big Dogs" do it, right. It was cool to read how he asked others for their help.

There is a new piece that has just gone into the live show that I call a Boy and his Ball. It is beautiful and a real fooler even though Penn intros the piece by telling the audience EXACTLY what the method is. Only Penn and Teller could get away with something like that. Two solo pieces by Teller that have always been in their active repertoire are Needles and Shadows. Teller also has ladder of swords solo piece that I created for him. The P & T live show is something to be watched and studied repeatedly. Many magicians get caught up in the surface of the show and either love or hate it. What most miss is that these two put more thought into what they do than any other major act in magic. There are so many levels to what they do. Their relationship with their audience and their audience management is very subtle but profound. And the way they structure their shows is much more than just lining up duo pieces followed by solo pieces. They compose the line up making certain that the content of the pieces and themes they explore fit together and build a real statement of who they are and their point of view. And then there are the pieces themselves. There is so much thought put into them. They are truly works of Art. I don't think there is any finer piece of performance art than their flag burning routine. It is lovely magic that is deeply patriotic without a touch of schmaltz or jingoism. And like all Art, it will not appeal to everyone (nor should it.) The saddest thing is when magicians just dismiss them as, "That loudmouth guy and the silent one that expose magic." |

Wow...I think this is the first time I have truly been upset that I didn't come up with this method...its ingenious. They took something so simple and made it completely original and beautiful. Everything is timed perfectly and its just absolutely incredible. I loved the part when he first throws the coins back into the tank and just stares...hilarious. Props to Penn and Teller for putting together such an amazing routine. Put a smile on my face.

I wish there were more videos of just Teller performing close-up illusions. There is so much going on and he executes everything perfectly. He knows his stuff inside and out. Watching him work is inspiring.

I have much respect for Penn and Teller.
