First off, I completely know what you mean, and I was bemoaning that loss, also, for quite a few years. My own take is that boxing's "heydays" generally occur when great or very good fighters exist at the same time in the same or adjacent weight classes. If there are 5 or 6 great fighters, but one's a heavyweight, one's a light-heavy, one's a welterweight, etc., you're not going to get much excitement. But our grandfathers probably bemoaned the loss of the glory days they remembered, when Dempsey and Tunney were squaring off...but stick around long enough, and you've got rivalries like Pep-Saddler, Graziano-Zale, etc. And people who grew up on the boxing of the 50's were probably jaded for a while, until Ali, Frazier, and Foreman all went at each other. The 80's, the era I lamented after its passing, were special for pretty much the same reason... Holy cow...Leonard, Duran, Hearns, and Hagler, and THEY ALL FOUGHT EACH OTHER. Not to mention Arguello-Pryor, Wilfredo Gomez, who was close enough in weight to take on both Salvador Sanchez and Lupe Pintor, etc. And my perspective is, in the last few years, it's come back around again. Yes, it sucks that it's mostly on PPV nowadays (but hey, we had to order Leonard-Hearns I on "ON TV"), but MAN, there have been some good fighters involved in some multiple-fight epic battles. I just saw the third clash of Rafael Marquez-Israel Vazquez on Saturday night, FREE cable TV, and it was a war, just like the previous two...a trilogy that belongs up there with the best of 'em. The recent Corrales-Castillo fights, Marco Antonio Barrera's wars against a number of great fighters (Morales, particularly), Manny Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez, Kelly Pavlik-Jermain Taylor... there have been some REALLY good fights lately, and really good rivalries, too. So just because there are phases where it's not as good as it used to be, don't think it's gone for good...seems to come and go in phases, and I think we've been on a 3-4 year upswing recently.

Yeah, you're probably right. I know the "heyday" I referred to was just one of many heydays. But the sport has taken some hits and MMA is taking people away from the sweet science.
I grew up mostly in the 80's. Ages 12-22 were in the eighties and I watched a ton of boxing in that time period. Epsn came about while I was in Jr High School or so and that what really fed my appitite for boxing. The 80's were a great decade for boxing. As well as the early to mid 90's. Then the heavy weight division kind of fell apart and a lot of the stuff throughout the mid to late 90's put me off of boxing. So I didn't follow as closely as I used to. But there have always been good fighters and good fights going on. I have been following a little more closely lately and maybe someone will come along and ignite some real interest for me soon. I still like the sport very, very much. And when I'm feeling nostalgic I can always pop in Hearns-Hagler, Leonard-Hearns, Tyson-Douglas, Ali-Norton, Ali-Frasier or any number of great, great fights.

If you have cable, check the Vazquez-Marquez fight....I think they've been showing replays fairly often.

I do and I'm wondering if that was on the other night. I by passed a fight that looked pretty good and forgot to go back. What are they showing it on, ESPN?

Showtime, I think...they showed it live for free Saturday night, and I think it's been rerun since. Possibly HBO, but definitely one of those two.

Ah, the Donner's. Fascinating story.
As long as your hydrated, most people could do a month without food, if conditions were optimal. The Donner's might have started seeing each other as big hams because of the stress/fear factor right away. Plus they had exposure problems.
