I just got Color Monte and love it and am thinking of getting Skinners Ultimate Monte. I know skinners is a "gaffed" version can anyone PM me just exactly what the gaff is Thanks Howard |

There is a very inexpensive book by John Scarne. It is called "Three Card Monte." It costs $4.00 or $5.00 or so at most magic stores. I started going through it last week. He teaches the basic moves, good excercises, and a number of Monte routines.
Magic is fun!!!

I have both the Daryl video and the scondrels book. I learned a lot more from the video, the book has some interesting historical notes and some extras you might find useful.

Learning about the Monte is a lot like learning the Cups and Balls. It is a classic and a student can take his learning to just about any level. Though Daryl's video is very complete in respect to moves and methods, it does not really go past the idea that the Monte is more than just a magic trick. The Scarne book and the School for Scoundrels books both deal with the history and psychology of the Monte.
I highly recommend the School for Scoundrels book. It is the only book I have found that treats the monte as a true street scam. It is important to know the history of the monte to understand how it became the most famous scam of all and it is important to understand the psychology to understand why is still so commonly used as a scam. The School for Scoundrels book will show you both and then applies this knowledge to a magical performance. I have performed the monte for years and my routine is based on Dai Vernon's, but the School for Scoundrels book helped me to understand that the appeal of the monte is not that the spectator cannot find the ace, but that a well crafted con can draw a normally logical and level-headed person into throwing away their money on a game they know they can't win. If you need any help with the mechanics or the routining of the monte, just let me know and I'll be happy to help you further. Thanks, Richard Green

real 3 card monte is nothing like color monte or ultimate monte.
With all due respect to Richard who is 100% correct, a beginner should start with Daryls 3 card monte. If you have the money go to school for scoundrels dot com get the book then the video. Actually, I should say go to Richards site http://www.callinsmagic.com , and buy all three then bug him with questions. Actually I can answer most of your 3 card monte begiinners questions. here it is )"You havent practiced enough, keep tossing"( |
