You would think that a book that sold so many pre-order copies would have a ton of reviews up by now. Is the book so good that people don't want to tell others about it, or are people not liking it much and deciding not to post reviews?

It's your first guess.
Forget about the Trost book now |

O yes , I Iike it. Don't love it. There is a lot of 'hallellujah-shouting' because Nick Trost released a new book. That alone is good for a lot of pre-oders. As I wrote earlier a lot of tricks need special setups (so you can't go from one trick to another), special gaffcards or special decks. For $39.95 you can buy 4 DVD's or books from the Colombinisite. They delivered me more. Frans |

Many of the setups are not large and can be gotten into in a number of easy ways. As for going from effect to effect, I would argue that we do not buy a book or DVD necessarily to build an act around that particular book or DVD. We find what best suits us from what resources we have and build from there. One has many avenues open: 1. Build a few acts or routines 2. Utilize different strategies for working with setups from effect to effect. These run the gamut from switches to culling to a myriad other strategies. 3. There are a LOT of effects in the Trost book that require no setups at all. So, like any book, it needs to be viewed holistically. Simon Aronson's works are another prime example of this. Performers find creative ways to work a number of his effects together. Check out his routine "Bait and Switched" for some cool ideas. 4. Roberto Giobbi in CC5 has some interesting ideas for working with creating setups on the fly. In fact, the magic literature is full of such discussions; it just takes some digging. Aldo Colombini of course is offering GREAT magic at great prices. At those great prices, one can still get the Trost book. The Trost book - at least for me - is full of workers and I have already begun routining a number of these effects together. My mantra is the sage words of the master Annemann: "Effect is EVERYTHING". If it is a strong effect, that is, if it plays well for me, then I will do everything I can to make it fit in the context of other effects. I think that too often we look at effects in a vacuum. That is to say, we don't explore how a given effect will fit smoothly into other effects to create a coherent and smooth routine - a playlet if you will. People do a LOT of stuff from Stewart James and Al Baker in addition to Trost and Aronson and Annemann among others. None of these great magicians were shy about working with setups. The audience should never be aware of a setup just as they should not be aware of sleights. Aldo Colombini uses a lot of setups in his work as well. I would not judge any author by the number of effects that require setups. Instead, my criteria is how well are the effects structured? How can I make a certain effect or effects fit nicely into any given routine? Of course, as they say, your mileage may vary. I am speaking from my own aesthetic and principles I have been taught by reading and doing and learning from others. For you Frans it may be different, but I must say that the hallelujah shouting you mentioned is misleading. The joy of a new Trost book means some hard hitting magic. Many have awaited another large book from Nick Trost because his effects are great for the most part and the fact that to date there has only been one large book of his effects. In any case, when you purchase a resource or a number of resources, what you get out of it IS subjective, and you implied this in your post. But beneath that implication is a subtext that seems to say that getting "more stuff" is somehow better. If I am misreading you, please correct me. However, Nick Trost's reputation is well earned and well established in the Art. Give the book some time after you have worked on some Also effects. Perhaps you will return to the Trost book and realise that an effect you learned from your Colombini effects work well with something from the Trost book. Please don't sell this book short. Best, Vlad |

Hi Vlad, thanks for your remarks. My post was only ment to cool down the over-enthusiastic atmosphere around this book. More than once I bought an effect, book or DVD because of positive posts on the Café, only to find out that my purchase was 'so-so'.
Maybe my expactions where too high about the Trostbook. I mean, his last book sells for hundreds of dollars, is considered a bible for cardworkers and everybody wants one, but can't get one. So I expected a miracle on every page of his new release. Welll there are some, but not on every page. However, it still is one of the best magicbooks I own. Greetings, Frans |

Trost is well known for developing mind-bending card effects that don't require the use of mind-blowing sleights, many of which may be beyond the average card man.
So with the "mindblowing sleight" bucket empty what do we have left to create the magic? And therein lies the occasional set up. And if it's not an occasional set up then it's the requirement to move a few cards into specific positions. As there is NO real magic, it's got to come from somewhere, and without difficult sleights you should expect to have to put the work in elsewhere, in this case with a set up or card positioned specifically. But as I said, I'd prefer if folks either forgot about buying the book, or put it aside if they've already bought it Like many Trost effects from the first book, some effects don't really show themselves until you actually start working with them..........in other words, just reading about them doesn't show you what they'll play like. Never underestimate Trost effects! |

Arrrg of course my book gets here today, but the postman decides to take the obviously oversize package and attempt to slide it into the back of our town home mailbox where all the people for my section get their mail. The problem being that when slid in the back of the box and just about making it in, the package cannot be removed from the front due to a lip on the front door. Needless to say I called the post office and now have to wait till tomorrow knowing that this great book is sitting not even twenty feet away from my front door.

L&L is releasing a reprint of The Card Magic of Nick Trost later this month. All of you who have sought this book without luck now have a reason to rejoice...

It's worth considering that most magic publishers run from 1000 to 3000 copies of any given book.
It's already sold out of one printing, and will likely do so again. Easy to do the math. |

I'm expecting mine any time now. I think the demand has been high because people heard the last book was good but couldn't get it, so don't want to miss this one. When things are unavailable they become sought after, and in some cases get undeserved reputations. The last Trost book, however, was a good collection and I'm sure this one will be too.
I'm not worried about set ups. Sure it means I may not be able to use those effects table hopping (but in some cases with thought, you can)but at the end of the day a good trick is a good trick and there may be other performance situations/times where you can use such items to enhance your reputation. Why put limitations on yourself? Paul. |

I have been lurking in the Café for a long time and this thread made me register. I noticed that some of the guys here in the Café like rennie praise nick trost a lot. Honestly I am not familiar with his work are the effects in this book really good? Forgive me if I am a bit skeptical because I have made bad purchases before I am just making sure. Also are the majority of effects make you deal the cards down cut this cut that for the spectator?
