The topic about Groucho Marx has gotten me thinking.
Someone mentioned the line about the woman with 9 children loving her husband and Groucho saying "I love my cigar, but I take it out of my mouth every now and then." Groucho swore he never said that, and that no one can find it on tape anywhere. Soupy Sales was credited with asking "How come every time I show 'F' you see 'K'?" He says the censors would never let him say that in the 60's, and claims it got started by children who wished he had said it and began to brag about hearing it first run. Anyone know any other cutisms that didn't happen?

Gracie Allen never said "Goodnight, Gracie!" when George Burns would end their tv show with telling Gracie, "Say goodnight, Gracie!"
The only stupid question is the one not asked.

It's a small point, but Mae West never said " Why don't you come up and see me sometime." She said " Why don't you come up sometime, see me."

James Cagney never said "You dirty rat, you killed my brother." what he actually said in the 1931 Film "Taxi" was "You dirty rat, I'm going to get rid of you just like you gave it to my brother."

Photius, you seem strangely informed about what hasn't really been said. I'll have to think about that.
Socrates never said "I think therefore I am..." Wait. Somehow I think I'm misunderstanding the thread.... Jeff |

From: The Bible
commonly: "Money is the root of all evil." actually: "For the love of money is the root of all evil" (King James Version), or "For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil." (New International Version) "Elementary, my dear Watson" - Conan Doyle (Sherlock Holmes) This quote is not actually found in any of his books, but rather found in a film review in the New York Times, 19 October 1929. Actual quote: Although Holmes often used “elementary“, the phrase “Elementary, my dear Watson” doesn’t appear in any of Conan Doyle’s stories; the closest is an exchange in The Adventure Of The Crooked Man: “Excellent!” I cried “Elementary.” said he. Its first appearance is at the end of the 1929 film, The Return of Sherlock Holmes. "You dirty rat" so often attributed to actor, James Cagney, (and used extensively by his impersonators), was never actually uttered by him an any movie. Dr. Henry Frankenstein (Colin Clive) - and his shout of "It's alive" with the stirring of life within his non-human Monster (Boris Karloff), in Frankenstein (1931). Frankenstein has often been MISQUOTED as saying instead: "He's alive! Alive!" In Disney's animated film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), the wicked Queen asked: "Magic Mirror on the Wall, who is the Fairest one of all?" NOT "Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all?" |
