Can you please take the time to go to this youtube link and view a video clip from my kids show?
http://www.youtube.com/bernardomagic If any of you have any constructive criticism and/or comments, please share them with me - I'd really appreciate it! The video was shot using my Canon digital camera at a show in a Pizza Restaurant - with extremely tight performing space. The kids were literally on top of me! Thanks again for your time! |

I should also give credit to Terry Herbert's masterly presentation of the Silver Sceptre - which was the inspiration for my speeded-up version. You may wonder why everything was so quick - its part of my opening routine and I've found that the kids in Hong Kong can't sit still for more leisurely-paced effects. Also the tight angles meant it was very difficult to see the wand rising on my right hand side (in the middle of the routine).
Anyway, my aim was just to show a typical performing venue in Hong Kong and the reactions of the kids to silliness on my part (notice the rather blase adults in the background?) Thanaks in advance for reading this post. |

You did the job great. You made the kids laugh and have fun. I even had a smile on my face while I watched it.
I had the pleasure to meet Terry at Kidabra last year. He is a class act and what I see myself when I am his age. I have one of his new Silver Sceptre but I have not used it. It is like gold to me since is sent it to me Thank you for sharing the video with us. ~B-Rad

Man...that was just great. You made me laugh too.
Now, I'm looking at this from a clown's perspective, but there's only one little nitpicky thing that I'd ask you if we were workshopping: Why did you just put the wand away at the end? I guess I wonder about the motivation of pulling the wand out in the first place if you weren't going to use it. (maybe you did after the clip ended, I don't know, but it looked to me like you just brought it out to put it away again) I might've talked the wand into behaving itself for the next trick, then after the trick was done, have it start acting up again...then put it away for good. Anyway, just an idea. As is, the routine is hilarious, and you have a very engaging personality. I wanted to see more! |

I'd like to thank everyone who has taken the time to watch and respond to my humble request! Your comments have been very encouraging as well as informative. Thanks to Hoppini for the observation regarding the apparent redundancy of the wand - I never thought of it like that before and will surely rrevamp the routine so it is actually put to practical use. Thanks also to Bradley, Wanlu, Engineer_star and Kimmo!
By the way, Kimmo, my belated congratulations regarding your double victory at the Blackpool World Championships! I'd love to see your performance someday, but of course being in Hong Kong, it's not very probable! Thanks again for the honesty and camaderie shown here on the Café - I really appreciate it and hope that I can return the favour sometime. |

It works fine - apart from having to replace the exxxxxc after it wears down. One thing that I would recommend is to buy a felt bag from Frank Starsini - it made ALL the difference. His website is http://www.theambitiouscard.com However, I've considered buying the 'professional' model from Practical Magic (if and when mine wears out again!). Really, do get it as you can see that it really has a great effect on kids - up to the ages of 7-8 I would say... |

Great work! Can I offer a couple of minor suggestions?
Try using a much smaller cloth. Anything could be going on under that one! I use an 12 inch silk for mine. You may also like to try slowing down a little when you speak. If you appear in control right before the wand goes UP, it will add more to the comedy. Aside from that - GREAT WORK! |

Thanks Nicholas Johnson for your valued comments. I guess the reason why I used a 24-inch silk is so I can do the comedy bit of covering my head and dusting the child at the beginning. But I accept your point that a smaller silk seems to imply less trickery! I'll definately try it and see the difference for myself.
As for my talking speed, that's always been a bit of a problem for me as my whole show is quite rapid-fire...as I tried to explain, kids in Hong Kong are used to this faster pace of life and their attention spans are notoriously short! Again, I'll consciously slow down my delivery and see if it makes the routine more effective! Again, I really don't know how to thank all of you for your valued feedback and encouragement...but I eally do appreciate it! |

Like Nicholas, I'd noticed how quickly you talk and considered saying so, but it occurred to me that it might be a cultural thing. We North Americans and Brits talk a lot slower and less animated than many other cultures. And it doesn't matter to the routine. Its easy to follow whats going on, and the rapid fire delivery works quite well. The beauty of the whole thing is that I bet your routine is just as funny to someone who doesn't speak English. That's a special talent.
Good luck to you. |

I don't think you work it too fast, it's the pace that works for you. I also perform it much slower, my patter breaking up the visual effects, so that each time the Septer moves I garner a new laugh. You have one continuous laugh, which in many ways is better, think of the seratonin rush these kids are getting! I will try my routine faster today, and see how it plays.
Loved the clip. All the best, Potty. |
