Coming from an lllusionist and box magic background that started in the mid-1950s I must say that I have never bought an illusion or trick that did not need work to fit my character, redress for a show theme or firming up to make it work consistently in a manner that I needed -- until I got Outlaw's "Luna"
There is a line of reviews of Luna in "Penny for your Thoughts" section -- how is works and its aged character and all. But as a bizarre guy in real life as well as when I perform I must comment that this is the first "trick" I have ever purchased that I did not have to do a thing to to make it fit my character -- but one that also left places to add "personal touches" throughout. The piece is based upon the log of permanent patients in a mental hospital before Zoloft, in the infancy of shock treatments and lobotomies. While these procedures are not in the scripts provided, they are verbally added easily. Having produced aged routines myself (The Newe Amsterdam Tarrocchi Diary aged to about 1660) I know it is difficult to "age" something and keep it sturdy enough to be performed in the spectator's hands. Luna has met the challenge and yellowing the pages while not allowing them to chip, rip or crackle apart during reasonable handling. (This is not a trick to be handled by 8 year olds with sticky fingers---obviously.) The technique used to gaff the piece, once understood, is easy to use and can produce different results at nearby tables if you walk-around. If you can "skat" psycho-jargon you can have some fun exploring the reactions of the spectator to your clinical diagnosis of the patient and your spectator's reaction to them. This has all the elements a hard working bizarrist would like -- sadism, depression (Melancholia), and despair of insanity. All with no changes on my part -- as I look forward to using the creative places for personalization of the routine already available. ALMOST FORGOT -- After getting the piece -- make sure you sign in to the Outlaw forums password protected (by trick) forums. Nifty ideas and advice there!

Thanks for the review! We do list lobotomy as one of the treatments, and the scripting can be done around the experimental nature of psychiatry, which was still very much in its infancy during the period in which Luna is set.
I am so pleased that this one you can use 'off the shelf'... Cheers Todd |
