I got tired of coming home with a squished banana and a soggy hankie, so (and I am sure I am not the first to think of this) I just picked up a set of multiplying sponge bananas.
They look really good, especially at a distance, and now if I have multiple shows in a weekend, I don't need to take a bunch of bananas with me.
It plays just as funny because it is all in the reactions.

On stage, a fake Banana looks real.

That is an interesting concept for sure and if you have great reactions and facial gestures it can still play well. For me though, a lot of what I wnjoy about it is the mess I am making and the obvious nature that the banana is real and mooshy. I play off of that mess and get great laughs from it. Of course this just works for me. Each performer has to find what works best for them. If you still get the laughs just as good, then keep doing it that way.

Go for the mess! Especially if it is for the kids.

If you really don't like the mess, cut the top off a ziplock bag and sit it in the hanky. Makes a little crinkle sound, but that is easily covered by the children's laughter. Take it out later and reset with another bag.

BIG MESS = BIG LAUGH... at least for me.

Nice to mete another distnguished and snazzy dress Kyle. lol Man.. I used to remember when I was the ONLY Kyle around. (sign) those were the good old days.

I also just really like the mess. Part of my routine and my reactions are based on the mess and my reactions to it. For my character, it just seems to fit.

I think most of the the humor and what makes the routine funny is the messy predicament the performer gets into as he folds it per the instructions. I would never use a fake bananna for that reason, but to each his own...

I once performed this for a library show (200 or so people) and the newspaper story that accompanied the photo said something along the lines of "fake banana", and I'd used a REAL BANANA! That hurt my feelings! I go to great lengths to use a real one (albeit slightly green and firm) in each show.

The messier the better guys that's what makes the kids laugh. Your an adult in a kids predicament makes sense to them.

I have this trick but I have never used it. I think I might give it a try. With my goofy faces it might be a hit Smile

B-Rad, without "faces" this routine would be lame.

As for Fake, I saw Terry Evanswood perform his own routine, similar to the original, and I never knew it was a fake Banana, until one-day after the show he gave a bunch of KIDabra Members a back stage tour.

I think what really makes the routine is the personality YOU put into it. The magic in essence is so simple and last a few seconds. What is entertaining is the personality and the funny natics you place into the routine. One thing I did when I was working out my own routine was to study pantomime artists like Red Skelton and even Chaplin. Pantomime can really add a lot to the routine and convey funny thing to the audience without you ever saying a word.

My background of years in clown and mime work gives me the ability or skill to "sell" the trick, even with a fake banana.

I have said it before, it is all in the reaction, and if you reaction makes them believe you have just squished a banana, you have "sold" the effect.

I go for real and mess. I stop the Cd and go around and give everyone a chance to touch it with big laughs.

But, Neale, I have a very nice wife that will get it out when I get home and wash it for me that night. This is her favorite trick for me to do.

I just seen that they have a new one out that is made for easier clean-up. It has a new sound tracks with both male or female. A longer comical script with better music. You can read more about it here...http://www.hocus-pocus.com

Terry doesn't use a fake banana, it's real. At times, he even eats part of the banana- much more effective.

That is very much true. It comes down to what works best for you and your personality and character on stage. If you are perfomring it and it is getting great reactions and applause, then that certainly is a good thing regardless of which way you end up doing it.
