Arthur C. Clarke has died aged 90 in Sri Lanka. Prolific science-fiction writer, inventor, visionary and futurist, best known for his novel and its subsequent adaption 2001: A Space Odyssey. A man who helped to bring mythology up to date with current understandings and exemplified the virtue of marrying the arts, imagination and science. Fascinated by the possibilities of alien life("Sometimes I think we're alone in the universe, and sometimes I think we're not. In either case the idea is quite staggering."), science and the paranormal (and possibilities in general), he authored several novels, books and documentary tv series on them. Given the full Geller effect, he was as mystified as his colleagues; he later continued research into the possibility of psychokinesis and other abilities. He was amongst those who originated the idea of telecommunications satellites. His final novel was completed days before his death.

Also known for Clarke's Three Laws:
1/ When a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right. When he states that something is impossible, he is very probably wrong.
2/ The only way of discovering the limits of the possible is to venture a little way past them into the impossible.
3/ Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

He left instructions that no religious rites of any kind, be associated with his funeral.

Yesterday I bought another of his many books, today, a small tribute.
A fantastic man, example, and truly a life well lived.
