A Question O Learned Ones,
I'd like to record my voice with the ability to speed it up while recording (chipmunk like), or to slow it down, so that I can get a varied sound for my own introductions or as sound effects. A fly buzzing for example. My search for cassette recorders have only one speed. Any suggestions??
Thanks
David Paul

There are a number of software products that can do the job. You might try searching on google for digital recording or home recording. If you're unfamiliar with recording software, you'll need compression, noise filtering for cracks, hiss, humm-system noise and whatever special effects plugins.

I wonder if a DJ couldn't do what you want done?

In almost any city, there are lots of musicians with some version of a home studio that could probably accomplish what you want to do. Stick a notice up on a bulletin board at a music store.

Or students from xyz institute for recording might need to do a class project.

Don't know if this will help or not, but if you have a microphone on your computer, you are able to record sounds and voice with the built-in recorder and speed them up or slow them down, add echo, play backwards etc.

I have Windows XP and the recorder is a standard feature of the computer software.

Thanks all for the advice !!

I do have Windows XP and will look at that.
I was also told that The School For The Blind has variable speed cassette recorders/players for students. Again thanks Peter, Lee and Marshall for responding.

Some of the new digital voice recorders allow you to play back at a faster or slower speed, not sure how much speed range they have though. The advantage would be very portable, the disadvantage cost (although you can get cheaper ones for around $100 now).

If you need a really neat program that has great possibilities, I suggest "SoundForge". You can record with it and process the sound. One of the great features is altering the pitch of the sound (so you can sound like a chipmunk) without changing the length of the clip. Just speeding the clip might render the words ununderstandable.

It has tons of other great features as well. In addition to doing all the sound FX work for my magic (I use a different program for editing though), I have transferred my rare LP´s to the computer and restored the sound and then transferred them to cds.

The price is very user-friendly. Check it here:

Sometimes you want to check out the limitations of a product before you lay out cash.

For those who do sound, there are any number of sites that you can download trial versions from.
