You almost put me off this effect Eric, and until I read Santa's post I was prepared to take you at your (Close's?) word.
Not being able to do a trick in a walkaround situation that was never designed for a walkaround situation isn't really a negative.........it's just reality. In this case, meyegr's post (above this one) is perhaps far more accurate than it would originally appear |

Have it and like it, which I usually do when I buy things
from Becker and Earle. This because of all their clever thinking and long mutual experience of Mentalism and Mentalmagick which goes into all their products! You'll find a useful review here to help you decide if this is something for you or not: http://www.marketplaceofthemind.com/Texas_Foolem.html All the Best Magnus |

My goodness gracious ladies and gentlemen. No magical effect will appeal to every magician, or for that matter, every spectator. Any given effect will not be practical in all venues of presentation. What magic is supposed to be, for those of us performing, and those watching, is entertainment and fun.
Texas is unique, timely, topical and intriguing. Enjoy it for what it is, I know your audience will! |

First of all in Eric's defense, he was mentioning a potential flip side to all the glowing reviews of Texas Fool Em. He actually is somewhat familiar with the routine because I purchased it (as I have with just about anything Larry Becker releases) and commiserated with him on it. I also belong to Mike Close's board and felt if you read the full review Mike gave, it was a pretty accurate review. Would I have bought it anyway? Yep. I too thought it sounded an awful like Casino Royale/Light. I use Casino Light in some close-up shows and it is an easy reset. I adapted it to my stage show and combined it with Don Wayne's Room Service and my own version of a Keno/Lottery prediction. I had a custom predicition chest made out of aluminum to resemble the cash boxes at Casino's that they collect from the tables. There are 3 predictions inside, a written prediction predicting what hotel we would play at, the winning hand of blackjack, the amount of money won, and then a matching room number that matches the hotel previously picked and a Keno ticket from that same hotel with the 6 numbers that random audience members called out. This has been a big hit in my stand-up act for about 4 years and I was hoping that Texas Fool Em could be something I could follow-up with after the show with some clients. As it turns out, that is exactly what I will use this for. When I meet with clients after a show who ask to see one or two more things intimately after the show. This reminds me of when David Williamson told me that he basically performs Aunt Mary's Terrible Secret after a corporate gig when they want to see one more in the bar later. I think the reset is a little bit of a hassle, but that is just because I am still learning my deck of cards. I am glad it will work for Magic Santa in the context he wants to use it. I find it strange though that he blasted me on the Pocket Space thread regarding memorization. This has some memorization needed unlike Pocket Space which didn't. Still trying to figure out that arguement. All in all, I think I will enjoy performing Texas Fool Em. The custom crafted props are fun to practice with. I just don't think it will be something I perform all that often. I see it as something that I may do as a follow-up after a show when I do my Vegas Vacation routine, or when I have friends over for dinner. I enjoy most of what Mentalism Unlimited puts out. However, I would truly say that if you had to pick between this and Casino Lite, go with Casino Lite. I think it has a better kick to the head at the end. So back to the other arguement......really.....you can't do a subtrunk in a strolling gig? WOW. |

I have read a number of comments here but still believe this to be an excellent effect that would fit nicely into my existing Gambling / Vegas themed act.
The question about reset is interesting, I have a vast selection of original casino cards therefore my question is would I be able to make up spare packs to allow me the chance to perform this a couple of times a night and thus not have to worry up reset ? Cheers |

Yes, you could.
Personally the issue with reset is null. this is not really a walkaround type effect, so you may only perform it a couple times. |

Interesting.
And what do you say when the people you are performing for ask you why you fail to burn cards before the flop, the turn, and the river? Just wondering. Close |

I play a lot of hold'em and so do most of the people I am around. They would call me on that in a heartbeat. Can this be worked into the routine in any way or is that not an option? Also the add makes it sound like you win the hand with a 20 dollar chip and walk away with 2000. At a 10 seat table the most you could walk away with is 200 from a single hand. Am I reading something wrong? JS |

I also play a lot of Holdem...3 nights a week and once a month in A.C.
Having said that I hope they researched the rules of "Holdem" before they put out an effect that uses the name "Holdem" (whoops it is called Texas foolem) just because it is now popular. If the effect goes as it should in a real game of "Holdem" I will surely have it. If not I will surely avoid it like the plague.
If I were to agree with you. Then we would both be wrong. As of Apr 5, 2015 10:26 pm I have 880 posts. Used to have over 1,000

I ordered it from Hocus-Pocus---they had a great sale on it for $39.95. I'm waiting on it now and will post a review when I've had a chance to practice it a run through it. I was always wondering about this effect and when HP had their sale I just could not pass it up.
Good magic to all, Eric |

Well I received mine the other day and have had a chance to go over the gimmicks and a few test runs. I really like this a lot. The gimmicks are great. You get some "007" stuff with this. From the cards to the chips! The effect does take some getting familiar with---but the effort you put in will pay off. It's not complicated but you must KNOW your personal deck of cards for your tells. The cards, player cards and chips do all the work for you. I've seen some discussion about the "clipping". At first it does look like it should have been done differently until you read it is NOT a newspaper clipping BUT a Poker Mag. clipping. Then it looks like it should. I don't know why but I thought it was from a newspaper originally. It looks like it was taken from the inside of a Poker magazine. I can't wait for my next show to perform this gem. It's fun to do and I like it a lot.
There is also a demo of this on YouTube just type in Texas Fool Em and you will see Lee Earle performing it with Larry Becker (one of my absolute favorite down to earth mentalists) kicking back. I hope this helps and if you guys have any questions please feel free to PM me. Good magic to all, Eric |
