I am having the hardest time roughing cards. I am trying to rough half of several cards to duplicate a trick explained to me on a magic DVD. I have tried Testors and Krylon matte finish 1311. Neither seems to give the same adherence I find with commercially prepared decks. I have tried a light spray and alternately a heavy spray. Neither seems to work well. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks for the help. |

Two light coatings of the Testor's or Krylon at most is all you need. Spray from about 12 inches away from the cards. You want to mist coat the cards not saturate.
FWIW Cheers!

Maybe I’ve been lucky mine work fine. But all the info I have gotten
about making this type of deck was here at the café. (Got this from one of my reference file that I created when doing research on roughing fluid: (Hope this helps). ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......forum=26 Quote:

An idea can turn to dust or magic, depending on the talent that rubs against it.

Are you sure you are 'roughing' BOTH surfaces? This is a common beginning mistake. It's easy to read the only one surface need be roughed for it to work, but both surfaces that contact each other need to have the coating.
Also, half roughed decks are also somewhat more problematic than a fully roughed card. Try experimenting by roughing the entire surface of two cards and see what happens, etc.? Also, remember to give the surface enough time to dry, etc. That's probably not your problem, but who knows. Also, as above....it generally shouldn't take a REALLY heavy coat to work. Experimentation is the best way to get it down. Best,

Have you tried the Roughing Stick sold by http://www.stevensmagic.com. Personally speaking, I have found it to be a superb method of roughing cards with the added advantage of avoiding the possibility of inhaling the wretched stuff! Plus it is environmentally friendly. Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the help. Roughing both sides seemed to be the answer. As soon as I did that it worked perfectly. Thanks.
