A variation on the thread started by stoneunhinged.
What the movie that you saw the most times in the theater durings its original run? Feel free to list the top two or three without losing my love. Mine was "Star Wars" in '77, followed closely by Woody Allen's "Manhattan."

I saw Amadeus four or five times, and The Spy Who Loved Me a few times, too. But four or five times ain't nothin.
The movie I saw most at the movie theater was: Enter the Dragon. After that would come Way of the Dragon and The Big Boss. Generally, during my high school years, every weekend I watched kung fu movies at old theaters in downtown Honolulu. Yeah, I worked other movies in on a regular basis, but if I saw a movie on Friday night and another on Saturday night, I would go to the Golden Harvest theater on Sunday afternoon to get my fix. The first VHS I ever bought was: Enter the Dragon. You know, I need to ask my therapist if this means anything. Jeff EDIT Oh, I missed the "first run" part. Those theaters in downtown Honolulu don't count, do they? I guess I'll have to stick with Amadeus and The Spy Who Loved Me. |

The Jungle Book... my dad would break us kids into managable groups and he forgot I was in group 1 so he dragged me along in group 3 as well.

GROUNDHOG DAY. 5,632 times.

See, KARCH, I've been meaning to talk to you about this Groundhog Day thing. It's like Nietzsche's doctrine of Eternal Recurrence. Sort of. With the Nietzsche thing, there really is no difference between "more than once" and "an infinite number of times." So the answer can't be 5,632. It should be "...an infinite number of times."
Unless, of course, you actually sat in the theater 5,632 times, exactly. But even then, if we were to take Nietzsche's doctrine of Eternal Recurrence seriously, you actually have watched Groundhog Day an infinite number of times and will watch it an infinite number of times more. Furthermore, you would have at some point in your life become a stalker and actually persuaded Andi McDowell to fall in love with you instead of her character Rita falling in love with Phil Connors, and in fact you will have also been rejected by her an infinite number of times as a stalker and been put in jail. But you wouldn't, in Nietzsche's world, have sat in the theater 5,632 times, exactly. But in the Hollywood world of Groundhog Day, Phil gets it right by learning to be a goody-two-shoes and being nice to children and old ladies and fixing flat tires. It's like Nietzsche, but with a happy ending--sugar coated bullt-shit for the silly masses who cannot face the abyss. So, do you want to really tell us you've seen the movie 5,632 times? Or do you want to face the abyss like us manly men here in the "Not so magical, still..." forum? Hm? Get over Groundhog Day. You'll Never get Andi McDowell. You don't want her anyway. She's slept with something like 20+ guys! Didn't you see Four Weddings and a Funeral? I love you. Face the abyss. Live hard, eat junk food, and live by Dai Vernon's advice to Ricky Jay if you can. Forget about Andi McDowell. Jeff |

I grew up in a small town in Missouri. (DeSoto, population 4500. It was 45 miles and six centuries south of Saint Louis.) The only thing to do in the summer was go to the local drive-in. (The SkyView Drive-In.) Every single weekend throughout my adolescence, that's where I'd be.
One summer, for some strange reason, the drive-in had trouble getting new movies and so the same, awful, B-movie, drive-in only film, kept coming back. ("A Small Town in Texas" Starring Timothy Bottoms as the classic 70's anti-hero, Bo Hopkins as the evil redneck sheriff, and I believe Susan George as the hot blond chick.) Each weekend for the whole summer, there would be a double bill of: Billy Jack and A Small Town in Texas Dirty Mary and Crazy Larry and A Small Town In Texas The Town That Dreaded Sundown and A Small Town In Texas Squirm And A Small Town In Texas Piranhas and A Small Town In Texas For the entire season. By Labor Day, everyone knew all the lines and would say them at the same time. It was like "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" but with hillbillies. Eventually, after I moved away, they tore down the drive-in and built a furniture store on the site. I have this weird feeling that if I ever went back there, and went inside, they'd have that movie running on an endless loop on a VCR. Dan Day 22

Brian DePalma's Phantom of the Paradise. Played here longer than anywhere else.I had a nice thing going where the smaller kids would pay my way in because I looked like I was old enough to take them along. A few years ago local fans hosted Phantompalooza (hey, not my idea to call it that), where the stars made an appearance and signed autographs and so on. Thirty years after its release fans still packed the theatre for this event. Talk about a cult following.

Some one mentioned E.T. and I have never seen it. The first video I ever bought was E.T. cuz the wife insisted, we never opened it and I'm sure I still have it someplace waiting to be viewed.

Santa, until my wife came along, I had never seen E.T. either. Nor had I seen Jaws. I've seen those now, but I've still never seen any of the Matrix films.
I've never seen GROUNDHOG DAY, either.

3 times at 3 hours each. I was wishing I had brought a pillow after the last viewing....you'd think the first 2 times would have given me a hint... |

It is a wierd one...
Gremlins 2. I saw it in the theater 14 times. No, I did not work at the theater. I was on tour with a vaudeville tent show when it came out. Every Sunday after teardown and before we moved on to the next city, the entire cast and crew would find a theatre and go see it at the latest show possible. And we all sang along with the New York New York number. It just became a habit. We were an odd lot. I miss those guys. Gwyd |
