Hi all, this is slightly connected to my other post but different enough to stand alone.
I am very often asked to do a card trick with a borrowed, well shuffled, often beer stained, dog eared deck of cards. This means a lot of sleights I can do fairly well with cards in good shape, are simply not possible. I wondered what you Pro guys are doing in this situation. I know you always have cards with you, BUT for the sake of this thread, indulge me. I do a Karl Fulves preditiction trick after glimpsing the TC and BC which is quite strong, the written prediction being inserted into deck by the spec. I do a rising card revelation using only my fingers from the Royal Road that goes down well. Sometimes I will say I must count the cards to make sure there are 52 and sight a certain card near the centre of the deck. This allows another great apparent feat of prediction. From Royal Road again. I do the 10 sets of pairs from "Blackstones Modern card tricks" but never look at the face on any of the cards from start to finish. I feel the vibrations as I run my hand over the backs of the cards accompanied by lots of drama and acting. So that's roughly what I do if put on the spot OR with friends. I of course have many decks of my own from invisable, BW, blank, stripper, Svengali, marked, etc... but as you know.. there is a certain something that happens when you simply take a set of house cards and appear to do something unbelievable. When the deck is in disrepair I lean towards the effects that use a small number of cards. Reed McClintocks Twisting the Aces is by far my favorite.
And this is a great time to start tearing cards up, bending them in half, and stuffing them in lemons as well.

Alan's suggestion, performing Bill Simon's "Business Card Prophecy" move is excellent advice.
I start with that, as a way to demonstrate "typical card magic tricks" (all with an air of mild disdain) and then proceed to show a couple of "miracles", starting with Roy Walton's "Card Warp". At the conclusion of that routine - since I do the original version - I have the spectator[s] holding one half- card that is "inside-out" and one half-card that is "outside-in". Meanwhile, I have two other halves; I gather ALL the "scraps" and pocket them (or trashcan) - retaining the inside-out one - and finish with J.C. Wagners T&R card. Tank you; I be here all veek... Regards, Thomas Wayne

Yes I would get eaten alive if I destroyed the house cards in some of the gigs I play piano in.
I am not saying the gigs are rough BUT if I see a cat with a tail .... I know its a tourist. Regards Alan |

I do OOTW - which gives me ample opportunity to put a crimp in a few cards so the cards can then again be shuffled by a spec and then three spectators cut the cards - and I "read them".

Good thread this. Not too sure how to go about doing OOTW with a shuffled deck though. Do you start with Lennart Greens angle separation or what?
Steranko on Cards (Vol.1) has a trick called "Sudden Thought" which would be fine starting with a genuinely shuffled deck. Bit tricky though - you'd need to have a very slick half pass, and be spot on with your misdirection. Great trick done properly. I'm still practicing this one - I've not got it ready for public consumption yet! Another that fits the bill would be Lee Asher's "May the Force be with You". Spec locates the mate of a free selection. Definitely a contender. Good effects using a shuffled deck are valuable! Especially if you can set a remote key or whatever... |

I see two advantages, Geoff...
1. You didn't pay for the cards you maim and mutilate. 2. They hesitate to ambush you with a "foreign" deck in the future. (You should see what Scotty York does to their deck when someone is doing "on the side" tricks in his venue!!) |

The version of OOTW that I perform, I believe is UF Grant's version which allows you to perform it with a borrowed shuffled deck. It's the version I use. I also believe that Eugene Burger uses this method and it is in one of his earlier manuscripts.

The best trick you can do with a borrowed, shuffled deck is "Spooked" by Nicholas Einhorn. It really is the most powerful effect to do. A selected card jumps out of a prior freely shuffled deck. You can then hand them the deck back. Clean as a whistle.

Piano Man I'm not a pro, but I almost always do a triumph effect in this situation. I do a quick version with anywhere from 1 to 3 cards selected and revealed a la triumph. Throw in a few one handed cuts for flourish and it looks quite nice. Each cut reveals a card or sometimes I just ribbon spread for revelation. Simple but works for me.

I agree that Triumph is an excellent choice, as is almost any location effect (where you find a chosen card). I will nearly always do an ambitious card routine as well. Card to pocket or wallet are good choices as is a cards across routine. I would also do "For Real Prediction" and "Open Flippin' Prediction" from my book "Never Miss a Trick," and then close with Vernon's "Out of Sight, Out of Mind."

Tom Dougherty's "Devistation" (also published in Geoff William's lecture notes) or Daryl's "Untouched". Both tricks happen in the specator's hands while you seemingly do nothing and both tricks are killer (especially Devistation).

I always think that "think of a card" effects are excellent to do with a borrowed shuffled deck.
There are also, a couple un-gaffed invisible deck effects out there that would be do-able with a dog-eared, battered, and shuffled deck. Gonz :carrot:

Of course you will need to be prepared for this one, but doing Kundalini Rising with a borrowed, shuffled deck is very very effective.

For my money, I'd go with either Vernon's "Cutting the Aces" or "Matched Spellout" off the top. Neither requires any set up. Cutting the Aces leaves you with the four aces face up on the table at the end of the trick...and I think we ALL can think of a four-ace trick or two.

OOTW Card to Pocket A simple ambitious Card Warp Paul Harris' Ultimate Ripoff If I have a chance to play with the deck I set up for The Lazy Magician. Sometimes, and sometimes I even do this for magicians, I let them shuffle the cards over and over, while they do that I can usually catch a glimpse of the bottom card... then I have them cut the deck into three piles and pick a random card. I have them place their card on any of the piles if they place it on the pile that I know the bottom card I have them cut and complete the cut on that pile.. if they put it on another pile I have them place the pile that has the known bottom card on top of their pile... either way they will put the known card on top of their card. Sometimes I feel a bit chancy and I have them do one quick shuffle then proceed to find their card. I've actually fooled well-known magicians with this casual style of not touching the cards and throwing in the shuffle at the end. By the way, the shuffle usually doesn't disturb the pair, but as they cut watch the place and see what area the cards landing in so you can tell where the card is... approximately. I like to live on the edge when I do some stuff. Greg
