My first attempts at strictly mentalism happened around the late 70s. I was studying psychology and found I could get some extra credit by doing demonstrations. I was hooked when I started getting all that attention.

1968. Pretty darn good when you figure in that I was born in 1974.

Although I'd done a bit of mental magic earlier, probably early to mid nineties.
It's actually not a bad question, WHEN, but a more interesting one might be WHY? Like Greg it was during my continuing study of psychology that brought me to it, or it to me. (hmmmmmm..... sits back and strokes chin with thumb and forefinger) Anyway, it was basically to show off and to give the impression I was more than I am, although I probably didn't need to, or did I? (Stroking chin again, and murmuring with head nodding slowly).

I don't recall.
But I do remember getting in trouble with an English teacher during the 1970s. He pulled me aside after I had done a book test prior to class. He was curious as to how I could memorize an entire book, but had problems with a Shakespearian soliloquy. I've forgotten the name of the book test I used, but I still remember my Shakespear. Funny how the mind works. Tony |

Probably around 1965 or 66. I had been doing many party shows and showcases and was absolutely worn out from dragging equipment and Illusions and Dove cages in and out.
I learned a couple of Forces and bought a book test from Tannans. Light stuff...no baggage! But I still had to go through my dopey Escape Artist phase for a couple of years. I remember in 1970 or so, in Anchorage I had a small act of mental mysteries while I was in Radio. My favorite thing on the planet was the Bob Nelson Catalog.

If I had to guess, it would be '99 or '00. I'm counting from when I got really into mindreading, as opposed to mental theme magic.

The why of when we first engaged in calling this attention to ourselves was thus: Isso Liwok wanted to join the Cub Scouts and Isnot Liwok wanted to beat his father at poker. Pop Liwok had an eerie winner's relationship with the nines. Isnot never figured that out nor did he ever win.
