Happy to see The Magic Cafe is open again!
I had an experience two days ago that I would like to share. I have read pretty much about Cold Reading and I thought I would put it into practice, but the other way around, namely that I would go to someone who says they are genuine and see if I recognize that they are using Cold Reading, and see if I can block it (make them unable to use it on me). Two days ago I did that. I and four others went to see a "witch". Before I tell what happened I ask everyone here: Is there anyone here that for some reason do not want me to write about it here? In that case I will not tell any details, but only the "main" story. Mikael |

Shoot amigo! ...as long as you don't expose any secrets about CR of course, according to the board rules (not to mention the magicians code).

start talking
One day, when he was naughty, Mr Bunnsy looked over the hedge into Farmer freds field and it was full of lettuces. Mr Bunnsy, however, was not full of lettuces. This did not seem fair.

Ok, here´s the story!
I went by car with an aquaintence of mine, a friend of hers and the friends two daughters. 5 persons including me. We went to see this "witch" who was said to be "VERY GOOD!". Her home was filled with new-age things, and seemed very mystic and charming when we first arrived. I must also tell you that before I went I told a nice girl who owns a toy/newage store (where I have free advertising for my magic at kids parties-thank you!)that I was going, and she said:"Oh, are you going to see her? she´s very good! You´ll have to come back here and tell what you thought about her!" I said:"Ok, but be prepared that I´m going to think she stinks!" And the shopowner said:"Oh no, that´s impossible, because she says so many things that are correct!" I said:"Ok." Right from the start it was clear that she used Cold Reading. By some strange reason she turned to me as the first person to talk to. She had her eyes closed and started to talk. I used the blocking techniques from Ian Rowland´s book (for me personally the blocking techniques alone were actually worth the price of the book). Practically EVERYTHING she said was WRONG! I began to hear a tone of frustration and panic in her voice, she stumbled on her words, I began to feel sorry for her, but I did my thing. She pretty quickly abandoned me and started with the others. In short: She couldn´t read me, but she could read the others. She got "contact" with dead persons and correctly named at least one of them. I took notes but stopped after a while because of the amount of information, and because it became clear that it was Cold Reading she was doing. When I looked around and the new-age things, which had seemed so mystic and charming when we first arrived had lost their glow and now seemed like a big collection of things of a person that had carried her interests too far. The discussion in the car afterwards was very interesting. The others HAD after all some doubts, but on the whole they seemed convinced. James Randi once in a TV-special said that it was hard to block the reading that was shown, and now I understand very well what he meant. Conclusion: The witch had no power, and what she did turned out to be an example clearly recognizable from Ian´s book. Lastly, I visited the toystore again, and told the owner that practically everything the witch had said was wrong. The owner was very surprized and said that I was the only one she had heard about that thought it was a bad reading... Mikael |

Mikael,
I think what you did was a good idea. As well as no doubt being an interesting experience for you, it gives you some sensitivity to what it is like for your clients. The people who come along may be gullible or misinformed or ignorant, but they are people. If you are a reader you need them to stay in business. Just my sixpence.... silver and all that.
