Would like to build a "Rabbit Cannon"
I believe that one of the Osborn books has plans for a Dove Cannon. Does anyone know if that can be sized for a rabbit, or of any other plans that would work. I know that Malloy Modern magic sells one but it is a bit out of my price range. http://www.malloymodernmagic.com/cannon_cage.htm Any suggestions welcome |

Reading is FUN-da-Mental. If you don't have a spare $6,000 to buy the Rabbit Cannon, your first step towards making one is to find a tube that your rabbit fits into. You are lucky if it will fit into a large PVC pipe, because that is easy to work with, sawing and cutting to the right length, etc. After that, the rest is relatively easy.

Hi Spellbinder,
Are there plans for a PVC cannon somewhere in one of the Wizards Journals? Stephen |

No, thanks for asking, Stephen. It's something Jim never got around to working on since it's not something he would ever use for his Wiz Kid shows. How about working on one yourself and submitting it for the Wizards' Journals?

The reason Jim Gerrish doesn't do this with his Wiz Kids is because once the bunny appears at a kid show, everyone wants to pet the fuzzy bunny and no one much likes the idea of the magician loading it into a cannon and blasting it across the room. It sort of ruins the moment for younger kids.
However, wrapping the bunny in a box for someone to take home, and then discovering the bunny back in his bunny house on stage with a toy bunny left for the kid to take home might be another solution. You could do something like that with the Magic House of Mystery from Jim Gerrish's Hardboard and Duct Tape Book 2, turning the prop into a bunny house and using it for an appearance, a vanish and a reappearance of the bunny.

If Ray can build a "Gloves to Dove" tabletop that will hold a rabbit, your problem is solved! Use the tabletop to load the bunny into a cannon, but **** the **** until it is out of sight. Pick up the empty cannon (or have a toy realistic bunny head pop out the mouth from time to time) and move it across to the other side of the stage. Go back to the table and erect four sides of a cage on the table. Blow up a large balloon, put it inside the cage, and finally cover the cage with a lid to hold the balloon inside. Back to the cannon for the countdown. Boom, the cannon goes off, Bang! the balloon breaks and there is bunny safe and sound. When the kids stop crying from the horror of the scene and all the noise (the fog of war, I think they call it) you can let them come up and pet the fuzzy bunny. Sorry... that last commentary just slipped out.
I wonder if anyone has ever used the Rabbit Cannon to catch a bunny in his teeth? Just an idea.

I use chickens in the act and always wanted to build one of these for my show. Cannon goes off, feathers everywhere, chicken supposedly passes thru a paper frame leaving an outline of a chicken, and ends up in plastic box across the stage. To busy building for other people to make my own stuff.

For me the routine would be more like,
me and assistant bring out cannon & cage put stuffed rabbit in cannon and cover cage use a pull string to set off cannon - pull the string nothing happens pull it again - still nothing walk to front of cannon and look down in assistant comes up behind me with air horn - I jump and pull the cannon apart assistant pulls cover off of cage show live rabbit. No pryo, no bang, no live rabbit shot out, but live rabbit produced at end but should be funny.... |

In that case, you can use an old coffee can or cardboard oatmeal box for the cannon! No need for a $6,000 prop at all!
I like the chicken version, by the way! You've got to work a "naked" rubber chicken in there somewhere!

I wonder if a double load production device could be engineered? Something that would make a naked rubber chicken appear... "WAIT!"
Then, a second later... "BOOM!" In an explosion of feathers, the naked rubber chicken is suddendly transformed into the fully feathered chicken. "The feathers always take longer!" Very cartoon-like!

Right now I'm using the rubber chicken in my chicken wringer. Flip open the box and feathers fall out.

>>> Osborn books has plans for a Dove Cannon.
>>>Does anyone know if that can be sized for a rabbit, The Osborn book that includes the Dove Cannon came in the mail this weekend so I now have my answer, that the Osborn Dove Cannon would not scale up to something as large as a rabbit. Unless anyone has a source for plans that would work, I guess I will have to design it myself. |

I will, Thinking about seeing if I can build one that would use table for the Fairchild "Dirt Eradicator" then I would only have to build a cannon.
I need to check some of the angles to make sure that it would work the way I would want it. http://www.fairchildmagic.com/pages/prod......ator.htm |

After what 3 years I have finally started the build,
Here is a pic of the first mockup, barrel is 8in by 24 in. Issues, barrel is to long to be practical and I need to raise the angel to increase the trap area size so that a rabbit can fit. Click here to view attached image. |

Second Mockup
cut the barrel down to 15in, and rasised the angel. Trap is still smaller than I would like, going to try a 10in diamater tube to see if that gives me the room I want Click here to view attached image. |
