Here is a naive question, simply because I have not yet read or heard of the term...
Does the term “Haunted Mentalism” exist in our vocabulary or is there another term that comes to mind that already exists? What does this term mean to you individually and what do you think a lay-audience would imagine if they heard this term? |

The pre-existing term is Spirit Mediumship. And it's where mentalism performance comes from.
"Haunted Mentalism" sounds considerably weaker in comparison, in my opinion, and lacks the power of being a term people already know. When I hear "Haunted Mentalism," I picture somebody trying to read the mind of a dead guy Best, Neil P.S. Rick Maue's term, "HauntedMagick," seems to accomodate a spooky spin on just about anything in our magical world. I like it.

The lay public does not necessarily associate the word "mentalist" or "mentalism" with mind reading. Those are jargon terms that are common to the magic world. Thus, "haunted mentalism" would have little meaning to the general public.

In England, isn't a mentalist a crazy person?
I remember this from a thread on that Penny page back when I still cared to check in there on a regular basis. Chris |

Peculiar is a great word for what we do --- and all my informal research shows that the word "Mentalisim" resonates only with magicians -- and only half of them with approbation and approval.
To me - the term "haunted mentalism" creates a conflict in the reader's mind -- and indeed may stop them from going further. They know what haunted is -- but do not want to find out what "mentalism" is. "Haunted Psychic" and "Scientific Paranormalist" might appeal to two different types of customers and not turn off one another. How about "I read minds and see dead people"

Yeah - describing someone as a mentalist in the Uk, usually infers that someone is a bit mad or off their rocker...it was from the rave scene, and predominantly a show called Alan Partridge...
Dark Magick or scholar of the esoteric arts might make people interested...but for the main part, avoid labelling...thats my opinion anyway...

I don't know, but "Haunted mentalism" might attract the wrong persons as well as the words "Dark Magick", I don't know if in English speaking countries the subtle difference between magick and magic is more common.

Without knowing more about what you do and how the style of what you do works. (i didn't get much from your site,) I'd say, why not just call it Haunted Magic or Magick or Magik or Magi...whatever....you get the idea.
You are an "illusionist" who specializes in Haunted Magic or Paranormal Illusions. People know what both words mean. They may not entirely know what both words mean together but it's intriguing enough to make them want to know more. And, intrigue is one of the things you're selling. -C PS the more traditional minded on this forum may not want you to use "illusionist" but really...why should the big box pushers get the monopoly on an old word that truly applies to all of us.....

Daniel - you are right -- and that lack of understanding, particularly to a term like "mentalist" that comes form jargon (particularly magicians' jargon) turns potential audiences into apathetic masses.
In the 20th Century the term "Spook Shows" were often little more than magic acts with Ghoulish temed sets and tricks. They still are at Halloween. Because "readers" and "Fortune Tellers" and even "Psychics" are covered as disreputable (and many are) in the media, the magic community dubbed those who do mental magic -- mentalists to differentiate them from the cpn men -- and to me, more importantly, from kids' magicians. And the word "Medium" fell into disrepute because the the idea of talking to the dead -- and exposure. Probably a term like "Trickster of the Mind" would be honest -- but it is not simple or short enough to fit on a marque'. I often use Mind Reader -- as the public understands that. Many magicians disavow that with "thought reader" as their words --- but again at risking a one step removal from the public underdstanding. Let me put it this way -- would you rather go to a Comedy Club -- or A Satire Club. Just too -- think of the original proposal (then censored) of Angel's show. They censored it so it remained understandable....and decode-able to the public. So -- what then would you call tricks that use the mind and few props other than people's credulity and belief systems about telepathy, psychokinesis, spirit connection with the departed, blind-sight, apprehension of events, etc.? One word? A short phrase?

In India...people have not heard of mentalists or mentalism.
Haunted simply means anything to do with ghosts. To me its all about couching you mentalism as spirit effects! Beckers Out of body experience...where a card removed and pocketed by spectator is revealed by magi. Depending on the type of audience susceptibility,I might just say...u don't know the card,I don't know the card...but spirits can travel anywhere and at the moment the spirit of......has entered ur pocket..seen ur card and ...has just told me itis the.....bla bla....Thats Haunted mentalism by me. |
