For all you Windows users out there be aware that Apple has put some misleading statements on their QT Pro 7 site.
"Astounding New Codec And as a powerful application ideal for creating high-quality audio and video content, QuickTime 7 Pro lets you create H.264 video, capture audio and video, create multi-channel audio and export multiple files as you continue to playback or edit video. Powerful and easy to use, it’s also very affordable. You can upgrade to QuickTime 7 Pro for just $29.99 — why, that’s just 8 cents a day for a year. Then you can take advantage of QuickTime 7 Pro to: Capture Audio/Video... Use a FireWire camera to capture video footage and/or audio and quickly edit and share video postcards with your family." This comes straight off their website. What they fail to inform you is that it will not work in the Windows version! It is hided in the instructions after you upgrade from the QT Player to the Pro 7 version. So now I will have to buy another piece of software that will author in a format that QT Pro will import if you want to use the H.264 video format/codec which is the format that is desirable. And do not try using one of those file converters to change a file to an MOV file as it will be substantially bigger and the QT Pro 7 will fail when you try to export to the web the different versions for desktop, Ipod, etc. that QT Pro 7 provides. (I tried that also) Needless to say QT Pro 7 for Windows is not recommended unless there is a fix or upgrade so that you can Import thru Firewire from your Video camera.

OK, after playing with the program I have found how you can import a file without having to buying other authoring software. If you already have software that will export an AVI file, you can then import that file to QT 7 and convert it for H.264 codec.
Do not use an MPEG-2 file as it requires a separate download from Apple that is not free and there is a note that it still may not read the file. You can then run it thru the export to H.264 codec again and the size of the file will decrease even further. I have run this process at least 3 times without any apparant loss of video. Also once you have it in this format you can use the editing tools that QT 7 provides. And best of all the Export to Web conversion will now work which will give you up to 3 different file types, Desktop, Ipod-Cellular, and Iphone, and it will provide a script that you can enter into your HTML code so that the player will automatically determine which file to be downloaded depending on the user's connection. This saves having to make different links for each file. Now this makes the program valuable and lives up to its' hype. So I now say this program is worth upgrading to. Just be aware that Windows operators MUST have a Movie Maker program to be able to use QT Pro 7 to its potential. I have even tried it with Windows Movie Maker and it works (just make sure you export to an AVI file), so if you do not have a movie maker program you can use it and it is a free download. Apple should still change the website to notate that the "Use a FireWire camera to capture video footage and/or audio..." only works with MAC.
