What can anyone tell me about this trick? Bob Read mentions it a few times during his lecture on Cup prints. As far as I can tell it is some sort of small vanishing soldier or doll?

It's a vanishing doll. It is in Hocus Pocus Junior, and also, I believe in Scott.
The doll has a cape that is draped over it so only its head shows through. The cape with the head sticking out of the center of it is handled like the doll, basically. Then "a move" takes place. The head disappears and the cape is shown to be empty.

Thanks Bill. I searched a bit on the Conjuring Arts site and they had a few descriptions. Does anyone know if anyone still sells this trick?

It goes in and out of fashion from time to time. The last version I ever saw of it was done by Eddy Taytelbaum and was called "Apollo 13." It was the disappearance of a small space capsule.
There was a vanishing Hitler that was popular during WWII.
