Here is a quote from a press release that has a ton of
statistics about various psychic beliefs of Brits.

"Years of watching Mystic Meg, Uri Geller and Derren Brown
on TV have clearly left an impression on us Brits, with 32% citing
visiting a psychic as their number one choice, should they be
seeking guidance from the paranormal."

The full release can be found here.
http://www.prweb.com/releases/2008/04/prweb820804.htm

The title of the release is
"Breaking a Mirror, Officially the Mother of All Bad Omens"
It is a press release, so I am not sure where they got their stats from, but there are a bunch of them on psychics, astrology, breaking mirrors, black cats, etc.

What do the rest of you here think?

Dick, appologies but I don't really understand what your asking.
I can't see any link to DB in that article except for the journo citing his name.

There's quite a bit of difference between the motivations and thought processes of a viewer watching Mystic Meg (astrologer), Derren Brown (Performer who loudly disclaims) and Uri Geller (a.... let's not start that again).

Seems a mixed bag to attribute to motivating people to visit a psychic.

Statisticians are great at this kind of thing.

It's like saying "Years of watching the Crufts Dog Show, Scooby Doo and Cujo
on TV have clearly left an impression on us Brits, with XX% citing
choosing a dog as their pet."

I'll leave it to you to decide who is the paranormal equivalent of Scooby Doo... Smile

That IS just the point. In this writers eyes, these three that he sites, including Derren Brown, each have helped to cause Brits to have a greater belief in the paranormal, regardless of how they present themselves when approaching their explaination of thier powers or abilities.

The writer is a hack. He just grabbed whatever 3 names he thought were the most popular in the U.K. having to do with "mind" things, and made them his grabber lead line. The writer obviously either hasn't done his homework, or he did and found that Derren doesn't really fit in with his premise, so he just uses the name to grab attention and then leaves him out of the article.

Janus 109, you seem not to understand the purpose of s disclaimer. It's not to change anyone's beliefs about anything. A disclaimer is meant to establish the context of the performance as a theatrical entertainment, and perhaps to warn the audience for that particular performance not to adapt NEW beliefs that the performer doesn't want the audience to take on because of his performance.

I think the phrase, "should they be seeking guidance from the paranormal" is telling.

Imagine a poll that asked,
"Who would you contact to seek guidance from the paranormal?"

  1. Barney, the purple dinosaur
  2. An honest politician
  3. A hamster
  4. A psychic

Ok, so 2. doesn't exist. You get the idea. Smile
Humans make life so interesting. Do you know that in a universe so full of wonders, they have managed to create boredom. Quite astonishing.

I agree with the hacks premise. The fact that Derren does his disclaimer is meaningless. He leaves a vacumn of 'unknown' even with the pseudo explanations he gives and many people given the slightest chance will fill that with paranormal/psychic explanations once again.

I would guess the writer picked three of the most well known celebrities in the UK that work in mysterious or mind/mental areas, who to him appear to be psychics, or in some way related to that field.

Just to call the writer a hack, does not change the idea that many other Brits may also have.

Most writers in the media may be considered hacks, but name calling does not change
what his and many others perceptions may be.
