OK, I know the Harris handling. I'd like to know the opinions of people who know and have played with more then a few versions of this effect. Pros and cons of each handling, how easy it is to get set up, if there are any moments when you have to stop in the middle, etc. I'm not interested if you only know and learned one.
Thanks in advance! |

I perform this effect as it simply staggers spectators. Out of all the many versions around, I now use an adaptation of Gary Ouellets 'NetherWorld' from Close Up Illusions. It can be performed on the spot with a borrowed deck and there is a well thought out reason to have that 'pause' at the midway point.
While I have adapted this handling to suit my own style and despite the impromptu, no set-up nature of the routine, the effect needs to be extremely well placed within a performance. The spectator wipe-out nature of the climax means that it is a very difficult effect to follow.

For the dealing procedure I like the Lorayne impromptu method, where only half the deck is dealt (and the other half can then be shown to be well shuffled). Speeds up the trick and saves you the hassle of a setup. For the display I use Derren Brown's method of keeping the packets separate (which can easily be incorporated into the Lorayne deal), and Lennart Green's move to get the packets where they need to be. This combination gives you: no stopping and switching in the middle, no looking through the packets before showing them, and you get to show two separate piles, one red and one black.
That's if I'm feeling ambitious. If I'm feeling lazy I'll just do the Galaxy display, which goes over just as well. By the way, DB's version is on his Devil's Picturebook video, and Lennart's is on Volume 2 of his videos. Quinn
Every problem contains the seeds of its own solution. Unfortunately every problem also contains the seeds of an infinite number of non-solutions, so that first part really isn't super helpful.

JC Wagners "Prediction out of this world" is pretty decent also.
It can be done impromptu from a shuffled deck and only uses half the cards. There is also a cute "kicker" in the end where it's seen that you've precisely predicted the amount of "wrong guesses." You do have to "stop in the middle", but I'm guessing with a little thought, you could probably apply the "galaxy" technique to the effect in an effort to change this. Scott Guinn also has an interesting variation of the Wagner effect in one of his books, but I tend to like the original a tiny bit more.

There was an excellent thread on this subject in SS in June last year. Search for "Two degrees of separation"

I saw one version of this great effect in one of Colombini's videotapes, I am sure, under the name "it's a small world," and I liked it a lot. It is done in three phases and very clever.

I bought a book a while back that is all variants of the Out of this world trick. I do believe it was a Paul Curry product, someone might know better as I am not close to my books right now.

Does anyone know if there are any handlings that do not involve dealing the cards into piles?

If the cards were not dealt into at least two piles, how else would the effect of the spectator separating reds from blacks be conveyed?

Here is an interesting idea I have played with. If you have out a red deck and a blue deck, you have the spectator cut each deck in half and shuffle them into each other face up. They shuffle repeatedly, then deal the deck into two piles in any manner they want. Then you flip the cards over to reveal they've separated the deck into the blue backed and red backed cards.

Thanks leondo. I should throw this up on one of the other challenge topics to see what people come up with.

The red-blue separation is not a new idea (sorry). This presentation, credited to Dr. Alan Barnert, was already published in the original booklet "Out of this world and beyond" by Paul Curry.

In my new lecture, I have a version that does not involve dealing the cards into two piles. I just wondered if anyone knew whether someone else has ever come up with a version that does away with the dealing piles. I've been told it's brand new but thougth I would spread my investigations further.

Ozer-I love your site and love the demos. Why do I have trouble playing the new videos(the ones that say webcam). I get sound...and it brings my media player up...but the screen stays blank and I can't see anything(the magic is in my head). I know this isn't' your problem...but thought someone may be able to help me. I want to watch some of those. Thanks.
