Ben Blau has a version of the out of this world effect. It's in his new book Asympnotes and is called a pale blue. It's a great version that plays really well. On first read I wasn't convinced but having performed it on friends and family I can confirm that it certainly plays better than it may read. Anyone who is getting his new book should definitely give this a go. It's simple to perform leaving you free to keep the performance interesting. The best bit of it, which makes it different to a lot of other versions is that the cards are shuffled and shown mixed and there is no midway messing if you get what I mean. You give the spectator a choice and put the card down on that pile. After the whole deck has been gone through (if you choose) you then show that they successfully match all of the Reds and all of the black cards. No stopping half way through. In fact, the spectstot can deal through the piles at the end. I'd say more but I don't think I should. That will be the privilege of those who own the book.

I for one, have found no new reason to change method or presentation, for the last five years. Impromptu Lorayne + Wagner's Prediction + maybe Gilbert's clean-up on Harris's TA (I haven't re-investigated fully). I like the effect, I just don't find myself in the right mode for it.
It's not their senses that mislead, it's their assumptions.

"Best?" Who knows. Which tree is "perfect?"
That said, I'm partial to Grant's Nu-Way, but with a "Ted Leslie" addition to the deck so that when I do the first half after the participant has shuffled, I needn't EVER look at the faces of the cards. The "Leslie" addition is simply "scratched" in to one half of the deck, indicating things other than "money" or "love", if you catch my meaning. This really strengthens the deception in an already great routine. |

I have this feeling that some folks might be confused about the "Leslie" addition I mentioned. I'm deliberately trying to hide things from the public, obviously.
Think DeKram deck. Wink-wink, nudge-nudge. |

+1 for Out of This Blah by Armstrong. I really love this version because:

I will hopefully be releasing a new deck Out Of This World. I'm considering calling it Above And Beyond This World. It is completed and ready to be filmed. It's an OOTW performed with a brand new unopened deck of cards. The premise is... The deck is opened and given to a spectator to be shuffled. In fact, after shuffling, multiple spectators are invited to help give the deck a shuffle. Not just any shuffle, but a real riffle shuffle. A red and black card are removed and two spectators are invited to help in a game of chance. Half the deck is given to each person. One person starts laying cards on red or black and then the next person afterwards. Both are given the opportunity to change their minds and at the end they find that every card had perfectly matched with the corresponding color. Very clean and powerful effect. Especially, since the spectators are doing the shuffling and it is very clean and direct from start to finish. I've seen a lot of OOTW. I have never seen a new deck version.

I saw one in a Penguin Live session. Cannot remember who presented it, but I am quite sure it was from Woody Aragon. This one is very cool because the spectators do it.

I'll have to try and look for that. Either way, I don't think it's in the same fashion as my version. There is one move in particular I do that is not very well known. It's an unpublished Marlo shuffle. While 90% of the effect is handled by the spectators, certain subtleties are done here and there by the magician to make a truly unique routine. It does not play out like your average OOTW as it designed for 3-4 people. With versions that utilize a small audience if you are performing for a group. I am very happy about this effect and it is the perfect opener for any gig.

Sorry, just realized I was thinking of an Oil and Water, not OOTW. Mixing it up (no pun intended.)
But an OOTW by Woody Aragon might be great anyhow, should you find one, I would be interested in the source.

I do love love Lorayne's version. It's probably my favorite. I finally got a demo of my OOTW up on YouTube if you guys want to check it out and let me know your thoughts on the effect..

Hi Brian. I would advise you not to sell this version. I see nothing new in your handling. All present elements have been applied to OOTW in the past, in myriad incarnations.

What's new is starting off with a sealed deck of cards. the ability to have the spectator immediately shuffle the deck. The effect is very streamlined. There's no setup, displacing of cards, fishy moves, etc. It is extremely clean. Yes, there are many, many OOTW, just like many, many Triumph and Ambitious routines which are pretty much all the same in general. What makes them different are the subtitles and how the routine progresses. I have not seen a routine that progresses like this, performed with a sealed deck with the same key sleights that are needed to make it work.

It is extremely clean. Yes, Curry's handling is exceptionally clean. Quote:

You remove the deck, (genuinely) shuffle it, then have them (genuinely) shuffle the separate banks. The banks are assembled and Curry's procedure is enacted. |

I'm going to put in a plug for "Best of All Worlds" from Power Plays. I'm not really saying that it's the BEST, just a good one with some unique features. It involves two spectators one of whom shuffles the deck at the outset.
Look out - self serving plug alert: BTW Power Plays is available from me as a PDF for $19.95. The book is OOP. Mike

Lol. Thanks Mike. I'll have to check that out.
Rupert, ,I'm not claiming this is the best. I am very happy with how this turned out. There are a few things in the background going on that aren't apparent that change the way the presentation goes based on how the first person places their final cards. A nice subtlety a colleague added in that really adds to the presentation. In fact, we both worked on this effect together. Also, every shuffle can be done by the spectator, including the first riffle shuffle right out of the box. None of them felt comfortable or knew how to shuffle, which is why I shuffled. If you saw the entire handling of the effect, you would see there are new elements here. Otherwise, the same can be said to everyone who has tried to create their own versions of classic effects as I mentioned before like with Triumph and Ambitious. What makes them different or personal are those small unique changes and subtleties. If there's another version out there with the same handling, please let me know. I would love to know. I have done pretty extensive research and consulted with quite a few people. Many people even said they have never seen a version with a new deck. Although there are quite a few impromptu versions that 'could' be done with a new deck. But never any published versions.
