Now some people might say that the banjo is magical on its own, but I'm wondering if its possible to do something a bit more with a full-sized banjo in a parlour setting. Maybe an animated banjo, or banjo-seance is possible. What do you think?

EXCELLENT QUESTION! But I think that Bill Palmer is much more qualified to give us a few tip about banjo magic.

A banjo seance would be very easy to do. An animated banjo might be a bit more difficult, depending on the model of banjo that you were going to animate. A 5 string resonator banjo weighs about 20 pounds or so. However, by using an open back banjo and/or a lighter resonator than normal, it might be doable.

Now I finally have a use for the banjo sitting in my basement.

Well, my best banjo is an open back, but I wouldn't risk damaging it.
Maybe a Goodtime or just a cheap swap-meet banjo should do. Banjo seance...COOL! Thanks, Bill. |

There is something wonderful just about the shape of the banjo. I don't know why, but it seems more magical than a guitar. The production of a banjo would have, I think, greater surprise value than a guitar production.
On the idea of the seance, it seems that the banjo could lead to some interesting thematic material. Why would I want to channel a banjo player? I've got to give this some more thought. Thanks guys. John

John, you don't want to channel a banjo player. What you want is to re-create the era of both banjos and spiritualism. The 1880s and 1890s were a time in which both--for whatever reasons--flourished. Maybe there was even such as thing as "banjo spiritualism".

There was a juggler that juggles three banjoes and played a tune on them at the same time.
You could have someone go out into the audience and ask spectator's to whisper name of a tune and you, on stage would start to play it (radio device). You could build a banjo to be used for a broomstick type levitation. Dancing banjo alaa dancing cane or Losander Table?

Thanks for the ideas. Maybe if I get a disposable banjo, I can make a banjo through body gimmick...
And Pete, I'd love to see banjo juggling; that would be way cool. John

The ideal banjo for some of this would be one that had what is called a "spunover rim." They are quite light and easy to manipulate. Also a Harmony banjo from the 1960 - 1980 era would be good. Their bodies were made of bakelite.
I had a few ideas worked out where I would come out on stage and play Duelling Banjos with just one banjo. Then I was going to do a levitation of the banjo, followed by a vanish, with a reappearance inside the banjo case. However, the more I thought about it, the more it felt too similar to what Norm does with the violin.

I once had an idea where you have a small leather pouch or some similar object hanging from the neck of the Banjo that you naturally call attention to. at some point (later) something disappears and is found in that pouch...sort of a ring flight or burning $100 bill routine...

Not another ring flight on a banjo neck routine!
Just kidding!
