I have been using a silk fountain for a few years now and like the response it gets. I have a large fountain made of 18 & 36" silks. When they bubble up they just kind of sit there with the corners tucked into the center. Come to think of it, I think I had a similar problem w/ my Laughlin fountain as well. With the smaller fountain, however, I could gently shake it and it would open up all the way.
Has anyone else had this problem? (NO, only you fccfp ) How can this be solved? After all, what's the point of having a large fountain if it does not open up all the way? BTW: I have Duane Laughlin's videos on silks, silk fountains, hank balls, and palmos. It is a complete library on basic silk techniques. Very easy to follow as Duane explains the moves. I would recommend his DVD's and products highly. Thnx, FCCFP

FCCFP,
Yes I have had the same problem. I thought it was just me. I don't have a solution, yet. |

You probably have a static electricity problem here. Ot the silks are too thin and tired to have any spring left in them.
You can take them apart and rinse (separate colors of course) and add just a drop of fabric softner to the water. Iron them with a hot iron and reassemble. I never shake my fountain. I kind of claw at it from the bottom side. Hope that helps. Richard

Hi Richard,
I tend to claw more than shake as this gives me more control. The fountain is new, only been used a few times and stored unfolded. You mentioned a "static problem", would static guard be of help? Thanks, Jay

Yes, but use it very sparingly.

Er...no only you FFCCFP! LOL!!! I can't imagine a tight, compact, trap fold, not unfolding. I have just the opposite problem. The dang thing wants to unfold faster than I want it to (and before I want it to!)!
My homemade, sewn together silk fountain is over 30 years old. It is only 14 sewn silks ranging from 36 inch to 18 inch silks (36, 27, 24, and 18) with a few free falling silks added for show. I never shake the fountain. The claw technique that Richard mention is the hold of choice. I will tilt the fountain forward a little and back a little to control the blossoming of the silks. The silks were old when I made them into the fountain. Jeff McBride once told me to not worry about ironing the silks as the wrinkles caught the light better and helped show off the color. I’ve never ironed this fountain although it has been washed dozens of times over the years. I iron all other silks before use (that was drummed into my head by General Grant).

Yes, Harry. I actually fold my fountain when possible two to three days ahead of time to let the silks relax and open more slowly.
I suspect the silk may be of such a thin momme that there is little spring in the silk. Richard
