I have found that Mick's works are all consistently brilliantly scripted, entertaining and easy to perform. His materials are "real world" things that he has repeatedly performed and to which he has polishted to a finely honed edge.
Which one to buy? Take your pick. Get them all. They are all good and none will disssapoint. Just, IMHO. Mike

I've made my thoughts on Mick's work clear in the past (absolutely excellent) but I think one more thing should be stressed.
The Act series represent entire acts that can be performed, from beginning to end. Mick's script could, theoretically, be used verbatim for many performers (not that I am recommending it). The routine is that refined and, obviously, field tested. I mean, really, how often have you read an entire act that is simple, direct, amazing, with patter, jokes, and transitions? By itself, the construction of the act is a lesson. This is in contrast to Bamboozlings, which is also very good, but is not, to me, a routine. It is a more standard collection of effects and thoughts. Again, all excellent, but there is that difference, IMHO. Best of luck to Mick and Slim and everybody! Lem |

Lem,
Excellent point. You are, of course, correct in that observation. Thanks for taking the time to make the clarification. Mike

Lem,
I'm glad you took the time to point that out. I have taken pains to always identify each book in a specific way (ie. Book One...Book Two...A Collection...). Nonetheless, I've always worried that someone would misconstrue BAMBOOZLINGS as another sequel to the popular Act-series. In truth, BAMBOOZLINGS is a collection of effects that I have used extensively in my resort shows but were not the foundational part of one particular act (such as HOODWINKINGS or PREDICT-ABILITIES). A few of the items in BAMBOOZLINGS had been published by other authors, but I wanted to collect them in a publication of my own. For example, Steve Beam included "Subliminal Message" and "Cue-Cards" in his SEMI-AUTOMATIC CARD TRICKS VI. To my pleasure, in his Genii review of Steve's book, columnist Michael Close regarded "Subliminal Message" as one of his favorites in the book. Also, I currently include "Crank Call" in my new Mentalism show for Disney. Best, Mick

Mick is one of my favorite mentalists and I have never seen him perform. Mick is always willing to share his thoughts and ideas and those ideas and thoughts are gold. Both of his books are great. If my memory is correct they are both priced really well. He certainly could ask for more. I have seen books that have far less USABLE material for a lot more money.

Nate,
We are both big fans. I just bought "Bamboozlings" which is not in the act series but is a great collection of ideas. Classic Mick work, check it out. I always get so excited when Mick releases something. I go out and buy a new uncased deck because I know many of the items will amaze me as I go through them. Bamboozlings is a great collection of items peppered with the classic Ayres humor. Even though it's more "magic" Carpe Chartaes is a real blast to read as well. That's latin for "Seize the playing cards" which I'm thinking of getting as my first (and only) tattoo ;-) DT3 |

Buy anything Mick Ayres puts out. They pay him again becuase he is giving you a show man....a freaking show! He includes transition lines, something performers today forget is important in keeping your audience engaged in your magic. If your show is choppy, or stoccato between effects and doesn't flow, they WILL GET BORED.
Mick is super-nice and if you ever have questions, he is happy to help. Mick isn't given you the 1,500 iteration of Russian Roulette with a pick ax. He is giving you performance pieces that play to a wide audience and will occupy the kiddies while the adults get bamboozled. Those of you who know me...know I work in a magic shop and have seen just about everything come across the showcase. This is not DRECK....any of it. Get all the notes and then tell your friends....in another market!!! |

Ritty,
I've "done my time" behind the counter in magic shops, too. Where (and where) is your shop? Best, Mick
