Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.

Marshall/Frances/Mai-Ling, you are beautiful, multi-talented, and have three completely different names.

Currently I'm going by Frances Firecracker.
it goes with my temper. ... otherwise, having that I have to defend my father's validation of who he is has been quite dis-enchanting. when people don't want to learn and read about his history and discounts him for whatever reason.
you will remember my name

Ms Firecracker,
You will find that there are plenty of us interested in reading about your fathers history, but don't worry about validation - his place in magic history is assured. Just get on with the book - there are many of us hungry for history - and just not enough books to sate our appetite. If I can suggest one thing I am personally very interested in - it is amazing the many different skills your father and guys like him had. In todays world even a provincial entertainer like myself has access to costume makers, electricians, marketing and advertising people, comedy writers, prop and scenery people, the finest magical craftsmen all over the world, probably more than 80%(it's a guess folks) of all magical knowledge available on the web or in easily purchased books etc etc. Go back a few decades and a magician would have had to do so much of this him or herself. I am intrigued by the mix of talents required back then. Destiny |

One reason is that I cannot look you in the eye and criticize anything around here, because your lieutenants delete anything critical. Any critical post gets deleted. I love the Café, but I do not love the fact that we can't reach you to tell you we aren't happy about some things. You are the Emperor with new clothes. I think that you and I come from the same neck of the woods; yet you and I never look at each other in the eye. Why is that? Steve, please contact me at jstone999@aol.com and I will give you an honest, intelligent, loving assessment of some things that seem to be going wrong around here. I repeat: it will be a loving, even Christian, assessment. I'm just a simple guy, it's true. But who do you want around here? Superstars and groupies? And to the mods: if you delete this post, at least give me the courtesy of passing it on to Steve. Jeff |

Someone raised an interesting comparison between the Penguin Forums and the Café -in essence stating that while on Penguin you had to put up with more kids being dumb kids, you actually had more latitude of freedom in your posting because the mods were not as draconian and arbitrary. I've gotten used to the idea that a good number of my posts will be deleted because of a difference of opinion with a mod or whatever. At this point I am more amused by it than anything, but I can certainly see how it would cause some people to just leave permanently.

A few years back, Steve showed up at the California escape convention. This gave us a direct opportunity to speak with him, and it gave him an opportunity to see us outside of the smear fests that had crippled the escape thread here on the Café. Although I am concerned about his pack a day smoking, he was reasonable and listened to what people had to say and the stinkers who were ruinging those threads have largely gone away.
Thanks, Steve. |

It used to get my Irish up; now I chalk it up to 'motivation by ego,' and try not to let ego motivate me (not easy, but very doable).

The best defense is simply to have a bigger ego than any of your detractors.
