I was at my local chain bookstore earlier today, and I breezed by the games/sports section (I'm a bit addicted to chess and the NY Times Sunday crossword), and a kid, maybe about 12 or so, was sitting on the floor, reading some sort of magic book (I think...didn't get a close look), and there was Bobo's Modern Coin Magic, on the floor, right next to him.
I wasn't gonna bug the kid, but I thought it was kinda cool. I suppose I'd feel the same if I saw some kid sitting next to an Abbey Road CD. Krintz |

You should have bugged him, given him a few references, and showed him a sleight. This is how the art grows.

Rutabaga,
Yep, I could just imagine a freaked-out parent thinking I was trying to lure the kid off to 'Magic-Land'. But, honestly, if it were my kid, I'd probably think the same thing. Kind of a shame... Krintz |

A few months ago I was at a bookstore, went in to pick up the copy of "Magic and Showmanship" I'd seen in there a few days previous. It was not on the shelf. I was kind of surprised to see it gone, but suddenly some guy comes back from reading it and replaces it on the shelf. It never occurred to me to chat to him about magic at all, I just grabbed the book before he changed his mind and got the hell out of there. I think a lot of people, even adults, would feel a bit uncomfortable if a stranger started chatting to them in a book store... but then how do people meet people..

I'm 21 and I just picked up my first copy of Bobo's Modern Coin Magic. I may not be 10 years old, but I hope I can live up to the title of "continuing the art." Also, I would have been delighted if a magician had come over to give me some pointers (fortunately I have you guys!).

I started off going between the Ammar video and the Bobo book. Well, still working on the Bobo.

I'm a parent and I know what you mean, every stranger that approaches my kid is suspect until I get to know them REAL well.Remember John Wayne Gaycey did magic tricks as well as clowning. As a parent the approaching stranger always freaks us out,but what we really freak-out over is the stranger that wants to be the instant friend to our kid;it's all in the approach sometimes.

I don't really want to get too hardcore into coins (I'm more of a card guy), but I want to be able to do a few impressive tricks at the table. Bobo's book is only 10 bucks and can be found anywhere. Ammar's DVD is about 30 dollars, give or take. It's a little out of my price range and I haven't had a problem doing any of the Bobo stuff.
