A few years back, Magnus Enarsson and Jonas Ljung, two friends of mine, got together and started brainstorming for a web-based system to keep track of gigs and bookings.
Jonas is a full-time performer, and Magnus is a full-time programmer (and amateur magician). Both skilled in their respective fields - and the first version was quickly put into use by several "heavy-hitters" here in Sweden. Based on what they've learned from the first version, they now have rewritten it from scratch, and it is now even better. Try it out and see if it suits your needs and preferences. And let Magnus and Jonas know what you think (if any feature should be added or simplified etc. ) https://www.gigthing.com/ https://www.gigthing.com/about/learn_more |

I use an excel spread sheet and my outlook calendar (which syncs to my palm pilot). Works great for me. I also back it all up on my yahoo calendar so I can access it from any computer free. I can't see paying $19 a month for this service.
My 2 cents.

Depends on the personal requirements of course. If working completely solo, then this solution might be an overkill.
But, for example, if you work together with other people; a musician , a sound engineer... sometimes you get the call, sometimes the booker... There can be a lot of excel spread sheets to check and a lot of phone calls before being able to tell the potential client anything at all. Here, you can have immediate access to the schedule of those you often work with. ...It's open and free for a month, so try it out. Preferably with someone who can pretend to be a booker/partner/musician... then try to see if there is any realistic booking scenario that it can't handle. If the spread sheets still are the best solution after a month of stress-testing, then nothing is lost except the time spent there. Right? |

I use the calender in my mobile plus a date book. I update both regularly. The date book is in case my mobile should fail me plus an old fashioned looking date book looks better on Renaissance faires, etc.

In this process, GigThing is a great tool that saves a lot of time. Most of the artists that uses GigThing today charges between $3 000-$30 000 per gig so $19 a month (often paid by their agencies) is proberly not an issue. I assume that you use a cell phone that's costs you something every month. You could save money by using only your home phone and sending letters but the cell phone is proberly worth it. The artists that uses GigThing have made a similar choice. For you nucinud, an excel spread sheet and your outlook calendar might actually be the perfect solution. For others, GigThing solves a lot of problems. We appreciate ALL comments so even if you don't plan to use GigThing, feel free to create an account and start a calendar. If you need more time to evalute it after the free period, just start a new calendar in your account and that one will be free as well för 1-2 months. Again, all comments are really appreciated. |

Jonas,
I just went in to add my first date and, although I like the way most of this is user friendly for us Magicians, I have a problem with the way you want dates to be entered in. The only formats dates are accepted are: 31/12 31/12 2009 2008-12-31 29/12-31/12 1/11-31/12, 7/1 2009 To me this is very awkward. If I were typing in today's date, I would type it one of two ways: 4-16-08 April 16, 2008. These in my mind are the most common ways of typing out dates and anything else is awkward. Any chance these formats can be added? |

GigThing on the other hand is just good for one thing - administrating bookings - but we think that it does that extremely well. To differance it from Google calendars, think of GigThing is as administrative tool for managing bookings rather than a calendar. All fields are adaptable with drag-and-drop so you can adjust it to your business model. For example, you might want to add checkboxes for "Contract sent" or "Payment received". Or a textbox labeled "On location contact". In short, you adapt the database to suit your specific needs. All bookings show up in a list sorted by date, and in mini calendars as well. The overview differs from Google calendars and is more suited for a gig calendar. Even if you work solo, have no management and never come in contact with bookings agencies, I would say that GigThing is superior to Google calendars for managing gigs. But the real advantages kick in when you have a manager, work reguarly with booking agencies or work together with other artists. GigThing is simply put built for the communication between these parts. So is this worth $19 / month? If you are contracted to a manager, I would say YES! It saves so much time! If you work solo and have a lot of gigs to administrate, I would say proberly yes. If you work solo and do less than 3 gigs a month, I would say proberly no. |

We realised this a couple of weeks ago and will therefor shortly add the option to chose prefered date format. Thank you for your input! |

Just to let you know, we have now added the option to chose your prefered date format so american dates works just fine now. Don't hesitate to let us know if there's anything you are missing. More options and a free version for solo performers will be introduced the upcoming weeks!

We have now been up and running in 2 months and during that time we have received lots of feedback and tried to adapt the service to meet as many demands as possible.
One of the most important changes was introduced yesterday - we're now offering GigThing for free. Originally we built GigThing to match the needs of performers working with a management. We soon discovered that lots of solo performers without a management (like most magicians) was interested in using GigThing as well. But for the majority of this group, the price was to high. Therefore we have now introduced Basic Calendars for free, with the features that matter for most magicians intact. Please check it out http://www.GigThing.com and let me know if I can help you in any way. |

I just signed up for the basic and I think it is good to keep track of gigs. I added a personal option so I can mark of family days too so there are no conflicts with shows.

I guess I just don't see what is so new or different here is all. I am sure for what it is, it is great, but what is so new?
As Nuncid points out exel does a fine job with outlook. The idea that it can be afforded so it is no big deal is not really a selling point to me LOL. Yep $19 bucks a month is no big deal true. But if you already have something that does it, no need to have it either. I was just curious I guess what was so different from this and the others. Heck if you update a simply giant desk calander every day, it amounts to the same thing.

A lot of people also appreciate that GigThing can update their websites tour schedule - see mine as an example: http://www.jonasljung.com/justnu.html. GigThing was built just to do one thing - keep track of gigs. You could keep track of your gigs with Excel or a piece of paper as well. But in my world, GigThing does it better with a drag-and-drop database and a great overview just to mention some features. Quote:

Do me a favor, don't break apart my posts for your sales pitch ok?
We are not here to sell your product, but to discuss it. Stop doing that as it is quite annoying. I am sure for what it is, it is great. But it is only as good as the information you put into it, much like exel, or ANY computer program.

Danny... I think you're being a bit touchy. Jonas is the one who started the thread. If you post something in it, I think he's due the right to comment. |
