Hi guys,

I'm here on a cruise ship and have been in and out of the casino. I was watching a Texas Hold'em dealer's shuffle sequence and I could have sworn he was bottom stripping every single time.

The game ended, and I asked him to show me his shuffle sequence so I could "deal my home game more professionally". Sure enough, the guy bottom strips when he shows me the sequence. He proceeds to show me how to do it...

He says, "Some people do it off the top, but I was taught to strip off the bottom. You can do both, but I find it's a lot easier stripping off the bottom."

Hmmmmm. Very intriguing. And this "dealer" didn't know that retains the order of the deck by bottom stripping? I'm surprised any kind of supervisor would let that fly.

It is a casino, but on a cruise ship. I took a cruise last month and was not impressed by the way the cards were handled, but I never saw any thing like that...

Does this guy handle the cards well?

I just have a hard time believing that anyone could avoid the stark realization that in stripping the deck from the bottom you may as well just skip this step entirely.

You should approach this dealer asap with a deck of cards in new deck order and tell him that you want him to see that you have been practicing this new method that he "taught" you.

Show him, before you proceed to handle the deck, that the cards are in new deck order. After you "strip" them, spread the cards on the table and just look up at him.

Then ask him if he knows how to do a short shuffle, and tell him that his cut will be thirty percent.

I like your solution CC. I can't imagine how someone can be a dealer and have such a lack of knowledge of how cards can be distributed during a shuffle. Maybe casino's on cruise ships have different standards on how games can be dealt.

There are some shuffle procedures that include bottom stripping. Often it's a single bottom strip thrown in the strip process, or can go as far as alternating strips from both the top and bottom. It never made any sense to me either but casinos do a lot of silly stuff.

I've only seen it in blackjack, though.

Yea, that's what he said (alternating top and bottom), but doing it off the bottom is "a lot easier". Well, yea... not doing anything is even easier. Very strange.

Interesting info on the strip cut Mr. Z. I didn't know dealers used an alternating sequence of top and bottom strip. Well you learn something new everyday.

Depends on the house. I've rarely seen it.

First bottom-strip shuffle sequence I ever witnessed was for one of the Texas Hold Em-themed carnival games at one of the Stations properties. The irony is after all that the deck is then put into a shuffling machine...

Actually a top-top-...-top-top strip achieves a different shuffling of the cards than a top-bottom-top-bottom-...-top-bottom strip so alternating is not superfluous.

I have same story but with bottom deal.

One my student, young boy, ask me teach him bottom deal. Something was wrong and he can not perfect it on a time of one day. He was very much disappointed it. He goes to school and tell to his friend "I practice a lot but still can not made Bottom Deal". Of course he wait question like "What means Bottom Deal?" and was ready to begin long story under strong secret how he made solution change his life and became card sharper, but his friend easily answered "I can made Bottom Deal." My student can not believe that boy what he never see with pack of cards can do something better than him and ask prove. Next was mathematics and both idiots decide pass lesson. They go to shop and buy pack of cards. They went to quiet place where nobody can see them and my student just say "Show it." His friend open deck, take cards on left hand and began easy deal all cards from bottom...

I guess people should always be specfic when the talk and NEVER ASS-U-ME.

When they say "deal"...people never say from where Smile

and when they say "shuffle" - they never say what kind - so I guess jog, push-through, strip-out, zarrow, etc. are OK. After all, they are shuffles...they just don't mix cards very well Smile

Well, if he had no idea what he was doing then it really makes no difference if he is legitimately shuffling.
you can fool all of the people some of the time and some of the people all the time but never all of the people all the time.
