Mr Beds
Sorry to be devil's advocate here, but I'm going to be anyway! Why? Who the hell uses chalk boards nowadays? Can't the effect you're planning on performing be performed with a dry wipe board or a large artists pad? Regards, Martin |

Are you looking for chalk boards, or gimmicked boards?
If you are looking for normal chalkboards, there are several threads already dedicated to their construction using chalk board paint. Here is a link for the paint: http://www.amazon.com/Rustoleum-Specialt......006BAEI6 With this you can turn just about anything made of a paintable material into a chalk board. If you are looking for gimmicked devices, you can make your own out of wood and paint. Personally, I use a different option in my So So Séance. There is a possibility I may be presenting my "Making it Fun" workshop at a to be named event in the near future (this will be one of the items), if you are interested, keep your eyes open. Tony |

Well its not that ive not thought of using a dry wipe (as I can nick the pens from work shhhhh)
but you search the better magic dealers and they all sell chalk boards, so you just go with the flow whats a good size board for all round use 40 x 60 cm ??? |

The effects I plan to use is mental epic but with an ungimmicked board that can also be used for other various predictions at any point
think 400mm x 300mm is a better size as don't fancy carrying a 400mm x 600mm around |

Most dry wipe boards are terrible for lit stage work. The glare is less than desirable.
There's something classic and innocent about using a chalk board (or two). Which is not to say that dry wipe isn't totally impractical for certain situations. I think you should go with making one of your own using that chalk board paint Tony recommended. That way you have complete control over the size you want/need. Or.. you can sometimes find them reasonably priced on eBay: http://global.ebay.com/gbh/search?Query=chalk+board or google shopping: http://www.google.com/products?q=chalk+board Even many local restaurant/café supply retailers stock them. |

Big craft hobby stores like Michael's in the US (cannot remember any names of craft stores in UK) may have various sizes.
I have dry erase boards but plan on some chalk boards too, for as mentioned they don't glare under lights like the dry erase boards can.

I used my Ultra Board (not the routine, just the board) at the last IBM Ring meeting and it caused quite a stir among the mentalists. Even from the back of the room you can tell that this is a classy, quality piece.

White writing on black is a classier look for the stage and parlour... and it gives the mental bit of the "roots" of mentalism (the spiritualists)... whiteboard -ugh...
But I am biased - I collect seance boards like wild... Also, if thinking of white writing on black background in general - NW with a white listo... nice indeedio.

I love the look of the ultra board but with shipping and import tax it would cost like £90 ($180) which is a lot for a chalk board.
if I ever get serious then I would get it in a heartbeat but until then gonna just get a lil board to start me off |

I'm actually going to buy a double sided chalk board from a toy store I found
its doublesided, wooden frame and it costs £2! although if I ever plan to move onto parlour shows the ultra board will be aquired. |

I picked up a decent sized chalkboard from Staples for about $10, but like a large dry erase board, it does not fit in my traveling case. My wife did make me a nice bag to carry the dry erase board (and the chalkboard fits in it, too), but it means another thing to carry.
I picked up a couple of smaller boards (16 inches wide) at a Pat Catan's, an arts and crafts store in Northeaster Ohio, for about $4 each. They both fit nicely in the carrying case. However, you get what you pay for. OK, but not great. Bobby
