Look into the good old "1089" force. Lot's of good ideas for presentation such as predicting the 10th word on page 89 of a book, etc...and the force is easy enough to learn.
Good luck. Mark. |

Hola Eduardo
Saludos SantiagoM Yeah I wrote it in spanish. |

Even luckier is that a lot of mentalism's power comes from the presentation you wrap around the basic effect. I'm thinking of something along the lines of perhaps one ahead, a f*rce b*g and a sealed prediction, or a p**k w*llet, but I'm sure others will have plenty of better ideas. How about, for instance, using an ID, but recasting as a mind reading or prediction effect? |

If you are working with him and can do a doubles act, try presenting him as having just discovered that he has strange mental powers and present a few "experiments" in telepathy, etc.
If he has to do this solo, the same concept will work as long as he gets the proper introduction from the Master of Ceremonies- present him as a "new talent" etc . If he has the gift of prophecy, you can do a Mental Epic type effect as an "experiment." If he has the gift of psycho-kinesis, he can bend some forks or spoons, or knock things over as he passes by. For telepathy, some work with E.S.P. cards will look like an experiment. By presenting him as a beginner, it is OK for him to make a few mistakes... he has not yet come into full control over his powers, etc.

I suggest that you think about his performing persona. If you present him as a Mental Prodigy (Lightning Calculations etc.), you are likely to be more convincing.
I have seen junior's ruin a potentially good performance by trying to adopt a sophistication far beyond their years. Keep him young and slightly bemused by his ability and he will be believable. Good luck! Leslie

Chichi is right on here. I once asked that famous authority on all aspects of mentalism, Max Maven about this topic. Max did not say children SHOULD not perform mentalism, rather he made it abundantly clear they are INCAPABLE of performing mentalism. He explained that they simply lack the authoritative presence to do so. It made sense to me at the time because Max presents mentalism with obvious power and authority and then lets the audience make up there mind about what they are seeing. I would be a rare child indeed who could do that.
However, years later I can say that I have taught scores of 11 and 12 year old children to perform mentalism in unpaid situations. I simply had to find a context in which their lack of authority would be a plus rather than a minus. And the context I found that works wonderfully, is theatre. Examples: the child presents a mental effect to illustrate a story, and he or she is using a child’s most potent theatrical tool, sincerity. Or a series of effects are performed having a similar theme but the child(ren) obviously assumes different characters for each one. After 10 years of doing this, I have found invariably that the audience willingly suspends disbelief, the effects are extremely well received and the audience is charmed; charmed but not convinced the child possesses any special powers, and that's fine. You lost me with your comment about absolutes. This is absolutely my opinion. My point here that a child will not be accepted as "the real thing" unless he has very rare acting ability or he is indeed the real thing, so make it obvious that this is theatre. That is unless he or she IS the real thing; in that case, fill your boots.

I just want to let it be known that I posted after reading the first paragraph of Christopher's post and then went back and read his (brilliant) second paragraph and thus rushed in to edit my original post which mentioned something about absolute statements.
The second paragraph of Christopher's post essentially says what I was trying to say (yet not near as elegantly as done by Mr Taylor). Sorry to anyone if the thread seems disjointed. Stupid trigger finger. (Sorry Chris.) Cool thread, though. DT3 |

Max certainly likes to say things with authority - its part of his mentalism shtick - but then take a step back and remember that is his opinion... and Christopher is correct, like I believe context is everything.... the key is... what would a kid of that age be like as a performance persona...?
Now one other thing to think about - is the audience already friends with the youth in "real life" or he will be a stranger? If he is performing for his school etc. etc. he is already hampered by the fact he is "known" and so his character choices might be limited.... Although by some weird accident (think of those whacked out Kurt Russell Disney films) the kid has temporary gained strange powers.... and they will fade maybe later (or get stronger!)..... DT3 already mentioned 6th sense... but if you are a comicbook fan, you have X-men and other character templates already to roll... like young Jean Grey... strange things have begun to develop as part of his or her adolescence... If totally unknown to the audience he can go full tilt boogey and do a Children of the ***ed persona... and freak everyone out as the harbinger of the New Age of Mankind.... However, I'd stay clear of doing thought channel for now... I'd also keep the # of effects low and just build up a good dramatic presentation for each... even if it is a simple DL, PW, or NW.... any of those done in the right context can fry an audience.... Just be likable in some way and make it clear he is there to work with them, and if he botches anything, they'll bail him out anyway! Good luck!

I think children are perfectly capable of doing mentalism. Have we all forgotten those 'gifted' children that popped up all over when Uri Geller first came on the scene? The scientists investigating those kids would (could?) not hear of any trickery. Children don't do such things, right? They still have those mental gifts that we as grownups have lost etc. The woowoo literature is full of them. Just don't do any effects with the premise that the mentalist has spent many years studying body language and such. I'd say a blindfold act can't miss, and a PK effect.

Are we not getting a little carried away here?
As I understand it, the boy wants to perform mentalism at a party of 200 hundred people - he is not embarking on a career - yet! Keep it simple, make it fun, suggest that he has only just discovered this 'gift' and can't explain how he can do whatever it is he has done. Spectators will then convince themselves that they are witnessing an emerging talent. The secret is to 'play down' his ability and his audience will 'believe' all the more! Leslie

I remember Max writing an article in Magic magazine. He sounded like the all-knowing authority in magic/mentalism.I respect him as a performer, but after those words, don't believe everything that he says. AJ |
