I saw Derek Dingle do an Oil and Water routine on a talk show, when I was a kid. I'm pretty sure it was the Dick Cavett show and the year would've been somewhere in the 70's.
When the Complete Works of Derek Dingle came out. I snapped it up. The routine I saw on TV wasn't in there. Derek used three aces and three kings. It had three phases. Two mixings that magically unmixed and then the cards magically mixed themselves. I tried to reverse engineer it from that one viewing. I put together a routine that I have used for the last 35 or so years. Does anyone out there in Magic Café land know where Dingle's six card Oil and Water is in print? If it is in print I won't put it in an upcoming tome. If it isn't, who the heck would I get permission from?? |

Ok, Oil and Queens it is. Do you know where it is published Oh "Master of the Gaffs"?

Kent,
The Dingle routine is in The Complete Works of Derek Dingle under the title “Oil and Vinegar.” The six-card portion of the routine is basically “Stewart Judah’s Oil and Water” from The Chronicles (not Stewart James as the Dingle book says). Sincerely, Darwin Ortiz |

No, Oil and Queens is Roy Walton, with more than six cards. But in "The Complete Works..." there is "Oil and Vinegar" on p.167 where it states he was asked about it a lot because he did it on TV. It's a combination of Oil and Queens with a Stewart James idea. Sure that's not the one?

Not surprisingly, Darwin's correct. (Paul is very close to correct.)
(I'm fond of Michael Skinner's approach to the Oil and Water plot these days, but that's another story.)

Darwin,
Oil and Vinegar it is. I know see why, when I read through the routine 25 years ago that I didn't get it. He has the wow ending with the Jacks. He did not do that version on TV. I have so altered his handling I think it may be nigh unrecognizable. I cannot do buckle counts convincingly from a small packet. I reworked some of Dingle's handlings with Ascanian subtleties instead. I also remember not having any Stewart James books, when The Complete Works of Derek Dingle came out. I looked up the Judah version in Chronicles tonight. You sirs, are completely correct!!! I appreciate having my old, addled mind corrected. My work on this routine is NOT worthy of publishing. I will continue to perform the trick, with my "Illogic Puzzle" patter theme. Dingle's/Judah's sequence is tight and laymen get it. Darwin, Paul, Thank you very much. You've removed a long-standing burr from the back of my mind!!!! KG |

The Stewart Judah version also appears, unsurprisingly, in The Magic World of Stewart Judah, one of those many wonderful cheap pamphlet magic "books" from Magic Inc.(such as the original RCT series, and lots of other good Marlo material)

And while I was typing previously Darwin appeared out of nowhere and stole my thunder I even have the Judah book, but simply took Dingle at his word. Darwin has a nice presentation himself for the plot. Paul. |
