I also would just like to say how wonderful it was to get tomeet so many of you Café members at the convention and at the get together. It was great geeting to meet you all in person and get a chance to share Café memories and stories. It was a great idea and one in which I hope we can continue going forward. At last couunt there must be well over 100+ Café members wearing Café member stickers and that has been a huge help to me and my wife in meeting and greeting other folks. What do you all think?

Joe,
You were not misquoted by me - I quoted exactly what you typed - the "train wreck" was my quote - it is very unfortunate that due to the lack of communication between the performer and the director things did not "flow" for James' part of the show - however, missed curtain calls, spot lights fading in and out etc - when the train jumps the track...regardless of the severity of the situation, it is still a train wreck ! I admire Mark for stepping to the plate, he was there in the am when I was working the scene with Mike Miller. Mark was getting the lay of the land and meeting the principals for the tech crew, he was doing his job, but as mentioned, communication and timing. As a professional, if James had known about the intense level of technical support he needed for his portion of a show, then it was up to him to relay this info to Mark and then Mark would have put a plan into place to confront the workload - an earlier call, advance lighting plots, understanding the flow of the day with the contestants and the lighting plots that were made available to them. This is a professional we are talking about here - not a weekend warrior, and this is the National combined IBM/SAM convention -a theater full of our peers , which include our worst and best critics-these things happen and it is a result of many different factors - no one is to be singled out and made to take the blame - if anything, WE can all learn from this and better ourselves as directors and performers - take into consideration the worst case situation the next time you are on the bill and have a multitude of tech requirements and the least amount of time possible. In a situation like a convention gala show - be show driven instead of act driven - think about the other performers as well and what is best for the show as a whole. Best, Steven

Everything has been fantastic. Kudos to those who have helped put this convention together, it is truly "The Convention Of The Century!"
On another note, I'm looking for someone that could lend me a (Chinese) fan for Saturday night. I have looked around town and at the dealers, but with no luck. Even a break-away fan would work. If anyone has one they could lend, it would be very greatly appreciated! Best, Sam |

Steve,
You said it much better than I. It is important for every performer no matter what or where he is performing to know what he needs technically, communicated those needs to those involved, and adapt the conditions that present themselves. EXCELLENT POST! Mark, I feel you are being a little hard on yourself. But knowing you, I would not expect anything less. I do sincerely believe, as Steve said, it was a combination of things that no one person was responsible for the "wreck" or derailment. Learning from this for all performers is important. I know I have had to learn the lessons of being onstage the hard way at times. Recall many years ago at Abbott's, a big name came in and drove us nuts with his cues. It was like he was doing a two week run not a one nighter. About five years later, he came back and his cues were much, much simpler. He had learned as we all must how to make things work. Riichard

I also agree, By far day 3 of the stage contest was the most powerful. I look forward to the stage finals.

Personally for me it wouldn't have mattered what day I performed. I am grateful that I had a chance to compete and perform with some of the magicians that I look up to and have inspired me. Just to be allowed on the same stage and venue was an honor for me. Most of these guys and gals have been in magic more years than I have been alive. So for me it's a huge win! Thank you all for your words of encouragement this week, it has meant a lot to me. Good night.

Just a couple of things...
I certainly hope no one thinks that I meant that the first two days of stage competitions were bad, they weren't by any stretch of the imagination. They've all been great. I just felt that the third day was the strongest. No disrespect to any artist who performed in day 1 or 2. I also would like to congratulate all of the performers, win or lose, who performed in the stage competitions. You should feel very proud to have performed at a national level and at the biggest magic convention in this country's history. For that alone you are all winners. -Ed Garcia

Hilarious lecture by David Williamson including a video of him walking around downtown Louisville doing his hilarious impromptu magic thing! David Kaye gave an entertaining history of children's magic and did a magic show for the kids. We got to see Silly Billy I'm action. The close-up and stage competitions continued to mostly top notched. A few notable moments: cups and balls in a fish tank done with by bubbles, dueling cups and balls with IBM/SAM theme, one magi forgot about his spectator and left him on stage to take his OWN bow after the magi took his bow, ignored or forgot the spectator, and walked off stage! I thought the International Gala was a bit of a bust. |

I thought the International Gala was a bit of a bust. What show did you see? I honestly thought the International Gala was the best show of the week. Everything was top notch. In no way am I discrediting the other shows or saying they were bad, but the International Gala was simply incredible and I don't think I'm the only one who feels this way.

I got to go yesterday with my Louisville Magic Club pass and I LOVED IT!!!!! There was so much to do that the day didn't seem to go by too fast! Since I didn't go to the contest, I headed straight to the dealer roon and I was like a kid in a candy store, with my money going as quickly as it came. Right when I walked in, Steve Axtell let me control his $4000 bird, which was so cool despite it still having some techinal problems with the voice functions.
As for the lectures, they were both good, but I liked David Kaye's the best. Since I'm a childrens entertainer, it was cool seeing how childrens magic has evolved over the years and David is one of the nicest people, not just magicians, but out of everyone I've met, ever! The International Gala Show was just ok, because even though everything technally went well, a lot of the acts were repetive. My favorites were the kids in the begining and the speaker production at the end. After that, I had a great time doing walkaround with the Louisville Magic Club and meeting new people for the rest of the night. I just wish I could have ran into more Café members than I did and I was looking forward to meeting Kyle, but he was nowhere to be seen for me. The highlights of my day were meeting Terry Herbert and David Kaye and having them sign their products for me. I was suprised at how smoothly everything flowed and how well my club handled everything. Hopefully, we'll be able to host another event of this caliber soon! |

Well, the convention just wrapped up and I'm leaving in the morning... for those who could not be here for the extraordinary gathering this week, here's a few observations from this first time convention-goer...
Words cannot begin to describe An Ha Lim's card manipulation act. All I can say is that it's very rare to have a performer leave you very satisfied, but also still wanting more. I just spoke with David Kaplin and he was smiling from ear-to-ear. He told me he was just hoping his act would help him books some dates... I don't think he'll have that problem for a LONG time! I'd be remiss if I didn't mention Red Hat's act tonight... he was "on" and was an inspired performance. While the votes for the stage competition were being tallied, I spoke with Kyle in the lobby and he said it right... all six of the finalists should just go on tour together because they were all simply awesome tonight. I'm overwhelmed at the course of events this week... I never thought in a million years that I would be at a convention with such greats in magic. I got to sit at the same table with Alan Watson... had a nice discussion with Michael Finney who, by the way, is so genuine and appreciative of anyone who comes up to him and simply says hello... had my picture taken with Mac King, David Williamson, David Kaye, Shawn Farquaher, Max Maven, Justin Miller, John Hirokawa (super nice guy!), Marshall Brodien, and Arden James. Sorry if I went on too long about this, but I will take the experiences from the last six days with me forever. It was an educating and entertaining experience and I have nothing but pity for those who were not here to experience it for themselves. Big props to Donal for putting together a nice Magic Café meet and greet... nice to put faces to the names here... we will have to do it again some time. I also cannot thank Kyle and Kelly enough for showing me around and introducing me to such great people. Next time we get together, the mojito's are on me! If I didn't mention someone's name, I sincerely apologize and hope that we will all come together again soon. BTW, Danielle Nelson, I expect regular updates on the act you're working on.

Steve,
Glad you made it back! I was worried about you in security this morning with all those talking electronic gizmo's... I wish I had bought the crying baby so I could have whipped it out on the plane!

Quick kudos to the folks out there who organized the convention. First magic convention I can remember where the lights worked, the sound worked, everyone could actually "see" the close-up and stage shows from where ever they were sitting (great projection screens!), events started on time... Also thought the "pace" for the week was perfect -- could take everything in without feeling rushed.
Truly hoping the combined convention becomes an "every 5 year" event! (personal highlight -- being up on stage with Wayne Dobson...what an inspiration!) |
