Sometimes people ask me this and I freeze. Despite all the card tricks I know, I can never think of a single one.
So my question to the magi masses is this; do you have a default card trick? If so what is it? |

crashfreze, You're post seems very indicative of a young magi realizing that he needs to take the next step. You know a lot of secrets, even the mechanics to get through many tricks, but you don't have a performable repertoire. Simply choose one trick that you already "know" and learn how to perform it.
It doesn't make any difference which trick you choose as long as it is within your technical grasp. Just choose one and learn to PERFORM it for people. It is learning this process that changes a would-be magi from someone that knows some tricks into a real magi that can present a trick in a deceptive and entertaining way. This is the process that every magician must discover, sooner or later. Self-discipline and decisiveness are needed to simply choose a trick to learn and then really learn that one trick before being distracted by other endeavors. Good luck.
Robinson.

I'm also an artist and the same thing occurs when asked to draw something. I always tell them "you have to tell me to draw something." I don't know, it's a weird thing. Im basically asking for a good default trick. |

It's really a matter of setting yourself, and preparing mentally for that moment. Don't crash...don't freeze...(heh-heh)...but do be prepared.
I have my deck always set for Chicago Opener, and I also carry a hot rod with me. So I've narrowed down my choices to two; cards or rod? It's pretty easy to make a decision from that point. And as you said, once you've done one...it's easy to flow into the others. Best of luck.

I had the same problem. The way I resolved it was to pick a single trick and always perform that one when someone I've never performed for asks to see a trick. I chose a trick that I thought was powerful but not overly difficult to perform. That way I could sort of go on auto-pilot and get over whatever anxiety I might have performing for this person. I found that once the ice had been broken I had no problem thinking of additional tricks they might enjoy seeing.
Paul Incidentally, the trick I perform is Jay Sankey's "Back in Time". While I used to eschew pick-a-card tricks as openers, I've found that this one is sufficiently powerful to establish me as a "real" magician. It's also a heck of a lot of fun to perform.

I too get this mental block and it cheeses me off!
So, what I normally do is, before I leave the house, I look at the use-able tricks that I could do and I put 2 or 3 of them in my pocket, like NFW, Twilight Angels and That's It! (my own creation). Besides that, I try to have AT LEAST 2-4 tricks with a normal deck, be it an Triumph with an Ace Strip-out kicker, two card monte or simple (but amazing!) prediction type effects. The best way to not get blocked, is to be prepared. If you're always prepared, you're always ready to 'show me something' All the best, Logan

Well, here is my idea..
Try to do tricks without a gimmick. (cards and etc...) Try to do self-working tricks or skill tricks(ambitious routine) These moves are helpful. Once you get the ball rolling, you can build up more effects. Symmatrix

When Lennart Green asked me to perform something I was dead-stopped. He then taught me to always have something to perform with making you ready for all situation.
You should have a perfected ROUTINE which you can perform anywhere or anytime. Tricks do not work without a good routine. They just becoming boring. Best wishes.

If a master such as Lennart Green suggested this, surely we should all heed the advice.
Seriously, Lennart´s advice is great. We should always be prepared to do something. We are magicians aren´t we? So we should perform whenever asked to do so. So be ready, always be ready. All the best magic, Pablo Tejero

If I was asked to do some card trick, my major choice will be some sort of ambitious card. This is my favorite trick indeed, I can vary the routine in any environment.
Another one I frequently perform is Tony Nois' Exchange of Cards (This name would be wrong, by the way.) This quickie trick is very effective especially for laymen. This is described in Tarbell #7. T. Takenaka

Definately an ambitious card rountine can be performed at any time. I also always carry 3 cards for the 3 Card Monte with me - I'm very confident with this trick so it breaks the ice for me as much as the specs.

psherman is some type of genius! I also routinely perform "Back in Time" when approached for a trick. You get a lot happening in a single trick and it's a piece of cake to perform. Plus, there's really no bad angles unless they're laying on the floor. So no fear of getting caught!

I, too, use "Back In Time" as my default/ice-breaker. It's almost a perfect routine. There were times that I had done several other effects for a friend or colleague. Then, when I got around to doing "Back In Time," the reaction was exceptional. "Now THAT was REALLY good!" It seems to be one that stands out.

For one, an experienced performer always has a few core effects he opens with. And that is what you should do. I might expand Robinson's statement a little further, actually. Pick an effect that is an opener type of effect. Learn it well. If it is like Red Hot Mama (needs some sort of set-up), keep your deck ready to do it. Or learn one that uses no prep. Learn to perform it well. Very well. Inside and out. If you spend that much time on it there isn't much chance that you will forget it when someone asks. And if you spend a ton of time on it, and still freze, you have a larger problem that needs to be conquored: stage fright. Either way, it will take some serious thought. I usually perform the the Flying Cut Revelation, which is basically a 'find the wrong card that turns out to be the right card' type effect. It has no preperation and achieves what I want on an opener. My other option is Red Hot Mama. I often have the deck set in its case for this effect. -Garrett |

This is like when someone has a tape recorder and they ask you to say something. Most people reply 'what do you want me to say?'
