Well, I finally did it!
Yesterday I ran my first Ride and Tie race. What's a Ride and Tie race, you ask? It's fairly simple to understand. A Ride and Tie team comprises one horse and two riders: while one of you is riding, the other is running; you switch off several times during the race. These are cross-country races, anywhere between 7 and 100 miles. Yesterday's event offered three distances: 7 miles, 15 miles, and 25 miles. It was held near Boulevard, CA (about mid-way between San Diego and El Centro), at an elevation of about 4,000 feet. Inasmuch as this was my first race we opted for the 15-miler. My teammates were Becky and Miss Cocoa. Becky had completed one Ride and Tie race before yesterday's - a 25-miler - and a few 25-mile endurance rides. Miss Cocoa - a 10-year-old half-Arabian, half-Peruvian Paso mare - had completed a couple of endurance rides, but this was her first Ride and Tie. The long-and-short of it is that there were six or seven teams racing the 15-mile course, and we finished third! We're planning on doing another in Descanso, CA in June: same team. I'll have pictures soon; when I get them I'll post a link to them. |

That is really interesting! I have not heard of that before.
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

It would be more interesting if you both had to carry the horse at some point...
Congratulations anyway!

Sounds way cool, but nothing for a lazy arse like me. Still, congrats for doing it!

This sounds way cool. I run, my daughter rides. Could we do the race without switching?

The lawsuit had to do with noise and dust and so on caused by the horses (mind you, the plaintiff kept noisy, dusty horses of her own). At one point the plaintiff's lawyer asked me how much my horse weighs. (Evidently different size horses make different amounts of noise or different amounts of dust or whatever.) I told him that I didn't know how much he weighs because I hadn't picked him up in a while. I: That's how you calculate the weight of a horse, you know. Lawyer: How's that? I: You stand on a scale, then you pick up the horse and stand on the scale, and the difference between the second weight and the first weight is the weight of the horse. |

However, there is no requirement about how much each teammember runs / rides. I know of teams where one member will ride for only a hundred yards or so, then switch back to running. (In fact, a common question asked of participants is, "Are you the rider or the runner?") Additionally, the definitions of "riding" and "running" are very loose: the runner can walk, and the "rider" need not be atop the horse. (There are spots on some courses that are so steep that the "rider" is forced to dismount and run / walk alongside the horse. Sometimes on a steep uphill section the rider will "tail" the horse: hanging onto the horse's tail and letting the horse pull him uphill. Usually the rider will keep hold of the reins in this configuration, but some people (I included) will tail a horse "on the honor system", without holding the reins.) The main rule governing the rider / runner distinction is that it is illegal for both members to use the horse for forward movement at the same time: the rider is in contact with the horse, the runner may not be. |
