Magicians have been doing walkaround in restaurants for ages but has anyone ever done walkaround vent in a restaurant setting?

I tried it once.
Not in regular restaurant setting, but in a party setting. I tried to do it from table to table, if there was one or more kids. But I should be carefull with my figure, because some of the kids tried to touch my figure with his/her dirty hands and some parents tried to put food in my figure mouth. So I quit to do it, and change my vent figure with a cheap marionettes puppet, but still do walkaround from table to table, while they are eating. And they still love it! Regards, Budi Ha Ha |

A local restaurant (Steakhouse type) had a ventiloquist in their lobby to greet the kids as they entered with their parents. He then entertained the kids as the parents waited in the background with their seat tickets and waited to be seated (which usually took 10-30 minutes, depending on the time of year --vbery popular/busy place. In addition to his ten minute routine, the vent also included a few basic ticks and did balloon animals for the kids. Seemed effective. Unfortunately, though the restaurant seemed to make a bundle on thier huge client base, the paid the ventriloquist very little. I beleive it was $50-75 range for the night. However, I am sure the vent received lots of additional work from this exposure.

I did a stint once with my pig puppet (dressed in his uniform). I agree with Budi, the kids tried to touch it with dirty hands. I would sometimes sit down with the people if they appeared to be nice and did not abuse the puppet (or me). Sometimes they would give you a tip. I would have them put it in the puppets pocket and retrieve it later.
I think entertaining the young ones is good, especially when they have to wait on a table. The parents seemed to like it as well. Of course, you sometimes get those who don't want to be bothered. All in all, I would do it again if the money was right. Paying someone to do this for two to three hours is a lot of work and exhausting, so the money would need to be 200 dollars plus tips. Just my opinion. BTW, I did two hours with a little magic between sessions and charged them 150 dollars plus tips. Glenn
