What is the difference between these coins?
I recently bought some liberty dollars (1978) after mainly using Kennedy silver halves to try and make my magic easier to see.But which do you think are easier for manipulating? |

It all depends on your hand size. Generally the halves would be easier to handle.

I thougt Susan B Anthony dollars (slightly larger than a quarter) was out by 1978?
Is that what you have? Other wise, walking liberty (which where not minted in 1978) are a type of half dollar.

Eisenhower's are the best! Easily seen and huge. I used to use Kennedy halves becuase I have small hands, but forced myself to use Eisenhowers and it added so much to my act.

Natanel,
If you handle the size of Eisenhower's, check out Morgan silver dollars.... IMO they're just so good looking! |

There are so many threads like this, someone should just clear the air and list all of the coin sizes.
The size tiers are as follows (from smallest to largest diameter): US Quarters -------------------- Kennedy half dollars (There's a bit of trickiness that goes hand in hand with these coins; Kennedy halves minted in 1964 are 90% silver, and Kennedy halves minted after 1964 are one of two different clad coin types, depending on the specific date ) Franklin half dollars walking liberty half dollars Barber half dollars - important to note is that Barber halves have the same diameter as other half dollar coins, but are noticeably thinner. ------------------- Eisenhower dollars - dollar size clad (not true silver) coins Morgan dollars - dollar size silver coins Peace dollars - dollar size silver coins, but are a tad bit thicker than Eisenhower and Morgan dollars. ------------------- Silver Eagle dollars - These coins seem to be the source of confusion for some people. These are bullion coins minted by the US government for collectors, and are basically a pretty way to hold the country's silver (one "troy ounce" to be exact). They're a tad big bigger in diameter than a silver dollar, but are also thicker. Since they've all been minted fairly recently, they are difficult, if not impossible to find "soft", and have very sharp milled edges. The reason these confuse people is because the 'heads' side is a replica of the "walking liberty" portrait used on the half-dollar coins of the same name. The tails side is an eagle with a shield. One last note on these is that they are made of 100% silver, whereas other silver coins (morgans, walking liberties, etc) are actually an alloy of 90% silver and 10% copper, which make a different sound. Coins made of the silver/copper alloy give off a prettier ringing sound, whereas 100% silver coins (like the silver eagles) make a 'clunk' sound. |

Yes,sorry the liberty`s l`m talking about are one dollar coins 1978 the edges have a copper look to them. But reading the above posts the morgans sound like they are thinner, maybe a little easier to handle??
P.S I`d say my hand size would be about average or just a tad smaller ,lcan`t do a palm to palm transfer with the dollar coins without making a clink. |

Anyway - what works for you really depends on the length of your fingers and to a lesser extent the thickness of your fingers. I've seen folks do the fancy Downs/Buckley stuff with both so it's pretty much down to what fits you best.
...to all the coins I've dropped here

If you're planning on your audience holding the coins, for example in a Coins Across, then be aware that (for example) some ladies' and many teenagers' hands aren't big enough to hold a stack of Dollar-sized coins (or in my case, Crown-sized coins) comfortably. In which case you may end up with them toppling onto the floor. Just a thought. Ian |

That list is a great jumping off point, though not quite complete.
I'll elaborate a little on the halves. Flowing Hair 1794-95 Draped Bust 1796-1807 (lettered edges) Capped Bust 1807-1839 (lettered edges with the last few years ft. reeded edges) Seated Liberty 1839-91 (reeded edges) Barber 1892-1915 (reeded edges) Walking Liberty 1916-1947 (reeded edges) Franklin 1948-1963 (reeded) Kennedy 1964-Present (reeded) (1992 series-present, in silver proof sets) There have also been a lot of commerative coins. Some interesting ones were the 1892-1893 Columbian Exposition (Anniversary of Columbus), the variety of Tercentary coins in the 30's and a lot of 1925 special edition coins. There were a bunch of coins commemorating Congress, the constitution and other things in the 90s. A lot of these coins are surprisingly affordable, though if you want to venture earlier than Barbers (which are pretty cheap), it gets expensive in a hurry. Some features of the halves that I think are worth pointing out: Capped Bust: Larger than the subsequent stand half-dollar size. Its actually a wonderfully-sized coin to work with - I wish they kept halves at this size. The lettered edge is a little tougher to grip than a reeded edge, but not too bad (easier than an English penny, harder than a reeded edge). Seated Liberty: These are the standard half dollar size. They are slightly thinner than Walkers/Franklins/Kennedys and are very close in size to Barbers. They have a little lip in addition to the reeded edge and are easy to palm/comparable to Barbers. Barbers: Pretty close to Seated liberties, they age nicely and are very inexpensive online, though its tougher to find a tough shell. Needless to say, anything before Barbers is some serious custom work. Walking Liberties: My personal favorites. They are reeded with a prominent lip that make them easy to grip (like 1964 Franklins). These are also such beautiful coins. For US coins, these are probably the most beautiful coin ever made (though if you want to invest about $2500 in a Draped Bust set, it would be quite stunning). There are a lot out there, so they are easy to match. They age beautifully and there are still plenty of reasonably priced, stunning uncirculated Walkers. Franklins: These have a lip, though a little smaller. They are also pretty easy to grip. They are a little thicker than Walkers (just ever so slightly). But these are plentiful and cheap. Shells are a bit scarcer. They aren't the prettiest coins, but they are nicer than Kennedys in my mind only because they are a little rarer and less well known. Kennedys: You should be pretty familiar with these. |

I started using Walking Liberty half-dollars but have switched to Morgans. I just find the weight and size to be a better fit for me.
