I watched the Reel Magic interview with Jason Alexnader, and he mention that he used to just do magic casually when sitting at a dinner tabel in or in a resturant for a table of friends. I got to thinking as to what would make some great effects fopr these occassions? They don't have to totally be impromptu, only seem that way.
Triumph may be one (provided you have a deck handy) Ring on a string Coin vanish and reappear under a salt shaker like Goshman Simple mentalism like???? All stuff with minimal build-up What else can you guys reccommend? |

I like to perform in these conditions. When you have a table, you have to take advantage and do some tricks like chink-a-chink, matrix, some cool copper-silver routines that require a table, coins across in your preferred version and almost any card trick. I like to do Design for Laughter (H&B), Chicago Opener, Out of This World (almost always needs a table) and gambling/ace location effects.
This was suggested above, but you get the rare opportunity to do lapping tricks with a table. I don't perform Gemini Twins normally (the B. John trick), but I love Bill Malone's take with the different ending (called End of Story) which involves lapping. There is all that cool Slydini stuff with han ping chien moves, T&R anything, etc, etc. |

Thanks to all for you recommendations.
For clarity, organicmagician are closer to my preferences. I considered some of Davis Ben's material out of Secrets, like Extension of Credit. Swing Blade is a brilliant idea as well Jaz. There is actually a lot in Al Schneider's - the Schneider Effect Vol. 1 that is good too that matches a lot of what you're saying organicmagician. Ring on Stick may work too. Am I on the right track? Any more suggestions? Thanks again, J |

I like to do little fun bits when your at the dinner table like mentioned. The already mentioned stuff is great also a few bits I want to look in to. But I there some sources I pull this kind of stuff from and if iam going for dinner the week or two leading up it I will pull something from is Tangled Web by Eric Mead and LifeSavers by Michael Weber. With the past two I do change them slightly as they can be quite involved but it’s a good start a great source. Something which most of is Daryls Fooler Dooler 3 vol set. Also learn a few pub trick / puzzle type things and some napkin origami. Its nice to just chat to people and pass on stuff because you don’t have that I am the performer you’re the audience dived so it nice to relax have fun.
I have friends that invite me to dinner parties if there enertaning clients or colleges and when there in the kitchen I chat set challenge it works done right and not forced on them people love it. Don’t know if that helps but I throw it out ther.
Enjoy your magic,
and let others enjoy it as well! |

I just got Vinnie Marini's Ring On Ring Off ring on a string effect. If you go to the "You Otta be in Pictures' section Vinnie is offering the effect for a donation with all proceeds going to help Tatay Amos. You can read all about it there. It is a great cause and a wonderful deed being done by Vinnie. Even if you don't really feel you need the effect, I can say it's an outstanding handling and you'll be helping out a person in need.
All the best, Jeff |

If I am out to dinner with family or friends I like to do Starcle, a bill switch, 3/4 across, paper balls as spongeballs. Just some that I have used often at lunch and dinner.

I usually have a deck of cards on me or in the car and will do a few card effects. Also Torn and Restored straw wrapper, love the impromptu zombie ball (zombie roll? lol), any Matrix or Coins Across effects work well, also. Torn and Restored napkin, floating napkin depending on environment.
Just a few ideas. Hope they help.

Resources - it's on Jazz's link... Greg Wilsons 2 dvds OTC & OTS are great. Worlds greatest dvd's 'dinner table magic' and 'magic with everyday objects' are pretty good too. You'll find reviews on all these dvds if you do a search.

I'll put in a second vote for Michael Weber's "Livesavers" book. An effect called "Coffee Machine" could work miracles, in the type of setting you are describing.
Basically, you add cream and sugar into your coffee..use a spoon to stir it thoroughly, then notice that the sugar packet and small cream container you used have never been opened. And, as in the movie the Matrix...there is no spoon! Michael has lots of wonderful ideas packed into his book. It's a great resource!

When I hadn't start magic, my friend did a 'zombie' bread bun with a table napkin and the bread bun. I was totally fooled and wowed by it. He also did the salt shaker through the table thing and I was totally impressed (then, of course). I think using the stuff at the table is the key to making it look 'there and then' and I guess of course, always be prepared to wow people.

World's Greatest Magic - Dinner Table Magic DVD has some very nice things in there. Many are super easy and require no setup. You're not going to make a feed-a-family-of-four career out of the material, but it's got some fun things that are really impromptu.

Zombie Roll gets some great reviews here but I gotta say that I HATE the way that thing looks. I had it figured out 3 seconds into seeing it done and I DON'T have an eye for figuring out tricks. If I were to do a zombie anything at table (if I could get up) it would be the Zombie Spoon shown on Larry Anderson's Jawdroppers.
I'll have to second the recommendation for Greg Wilson's "On the Spot". I just got it 2 days ago and LOVE some of the effects on there. MUCH better than Jawdroppers if you ask me (though there's still some good stuff on those DVDs too). 3/4 across is very slick. Florida keys might do well, too. Alright, enough ranting. Good luck! |
