What are the origins of the Haunted Key?
I presently use the “Haunted Key” produced by Fun Inc. I also own the “Spirit Key” made by Magic Makers, (But we all know about their reputation). Additionally I had collected some antique keys while I was in Europe, which are suitable for this effect. Since this has become a signature effect with me, I was hoping to research where this effect came from. |

There is no truth to the rumor that the Haunted Key was invented by Francis Scott Haunted.

The haunted key was the creation of Beethoven. It is located somewhere between Bb and C.

I do know it was first demonstrated by Ernest Hemingway in Key West, Florida.

I'm not sure of the Haunted Key's origin, but Barrie Richardson's "Spooky Key" makes the Fun Inc. Haunted Key a real mystery.
The key rotates 180 degrees in your closed fist. After which you can do it as per the Fun Inc. routine in the open palm. Google "Barrie Richardson Spooky Key". Well worth spending $20 for this. Andre

I agree, Barrie Richardson's "Spooky Key" was worth every penny. Mind blowing and great fun.
Additional comments : There is at least one eBay seller who sells nothing but old keys. I have bought several very reasonably which work great for this. Look for ones at least 3 1/2 inches long with a bit that is proportionally somewhat small. A couple of keys that I have bought I was able to saw/file the bit a little until I achieved the right action. I have had success rusting the Fun Inc key by grinding/sanding off the plating and then soaking in a solution of 1/2 cup of cider vinegar, 1/2 cup of Clorox bleach, and 1 teasp. of salt - WARNING TOXIC FUMES - DO THIS OUTDOORS WELL AWAY FROM ANYTHING WITH LUNGS THAT MAY LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BREATHE. Then let dry completely and spray with clear satin acrylic spray paint to seal it. The rusty surface is a bit of a problem if you're doing Barrie Richardson's Spooky Key, however, in that the key will move with a less fluid motion. One more observation : There are barrel keys into which one can insert a small cylindrical neodymium magnet, and then perhaps seal the end with epoxy putty. Haven't thought of an application yet, but surely there must be one. |

It's nice to know the history of our effects in bizarre or spooky magic. An effect's history lends itself to patter and our collector sense but the "haunted key" history is probably best found in our imaginations...or, if we researched the history of seance effects we may find the origin or come close. Interesting!!

No, no, no Bill. We are on a "quest" not a "Key West".

As I recall it was a gypsy item used by readers to test clients. Dr.Jaks learned it, taught it to Charles Cameron under great secrecy,(Jaks knew a good thing when he saw it). After Dr Jaks died, Charles made it public. I think he shouldn't have much too good for the likes of us.

THE PHOENIX
1952 Issue 246 Page 984 Dr. Jaks' "The Key" published eight years before his death with all credit given to him. There may be earlier references, but this is the earliest I've found. The presentation is different, but the psychology and M.O. are definitely no different than conventional performances. Chris P.S.--With all candor and kindness, our magical heritage is more than "a nice thing to know." If we perform an effect, we should know as much about the the history of the effect, including creative origins. George has been very responsible in the posing of a question that more of us should ask. I regret that my passion for Spinal Tap got in the way of providing a direct answer while minimizing the importance of the question. "But enough of my yakkin'...let's boogie!" |

I have what some have called, anexcellent version; of a haunted key routine to appear in Bruce Ballon's RIPPER book.

Here is what people are saying about it: “This is one work that will force you to drag your old haunted key out of the drawer. Dale has taken what in the past has been a 10 second novelty and turned it into a full group presentation. Using clever techniques and psychology you not only cause the key to move in the spectator's hand but also to become heavier. Obviously this work is not for beginners. If you are a real worker who is looking to leave the spectators with an experience they will remember long after the effect is over then I recommend this to you.”—Devin Knight “I have never used the Haunted Key before. I had seen it done, and it seemed nice enough, but there was never any real emotional hook. Then I read Dale Hildebrandt's Heavily Haunted and decided I must own this prop immediately. The thinking in this book is incredible, and the creations within Heavily Haunted also deliver a very powerful launching pad for countless routines and ideas. My key is on the way in the mail...always said I'd never buy one...until now. Kudos and thanks, Dale."—Don Theo III "An artful ebook on how to turn the haunted key into far more than a 'hey look what I can do' trick - Heavily Haunted is a wonderfully inclusive and memorable positive experience..."—Iain Dunford Heavily Haunted is an ebook that will be limited to 20 copies sold (this does not count the review copies that were sent out). After May 1, 2010 the work may be reprinted. See my Limited Edition Ebooks website in my signature for details. Sincerely, Dale A. Hildebrandt |
