Neal Patrick Harris announced on Ellen DeGeneres' show that he has been appointed to the Board of Directors of The Magic Castle. Does anyone know any details behind this?? Isn't being on the Board supposed to be an honor?? I thought maybe it was for magic's "wise elders", the ones most respected in the magic community.
Has Neal done a lot of performing in public, or is he just a star who happens to like magic? I saw him perform with Ed Alonzo once on a telethon when he was 12. They did the center cut illusion. That's the only time I have ever seen him perform. |

Neal is on the Academy of Magical Arts / Magic Castle Board of Directors.
It’s an elected position in which members of the Academy voted last month. Neal is a huge supporter of the Art of Magic. |

Oh OK-
So the position is due to his philanthropy, not a reflection of his achievement as a magician. |

It's probably more because of his celebrity than his philanthropy. Although we might be eminently more qualified, folks like Josh Superfluous and myself are simply not as well known and have not been on national television quite as often as Neil. Hence, we may never be on the AMA board...

This may well turn out to be the most asinine thread on the Café in a long time. We'll see...

Quote: I agree with you here. Neal was qualified for the position and he was elected. I have never viewed the AMA elections as a popularity contest.

No, I'm sure we could find many threads much more asinine than this one...
I am sure that he has much more experience as a magician than a lot of folks. I just thought that "philanthropy" was a curious word to use to describe Neil. My feelings - the higher profile the AMA board member, the better...

What about Jason Alexander? he's higher profile than NPH. Both however, ARE very good magicians. And one is from New Jersey! Yo, shout-out to Livingston!

One time about 8 or 9 years ago, while working for a concert promoter in NYC, we were doing a show with Fito Piez. It was a small show at the Town Hall on west 44th street. NPH came by to see the show. I recognized him and went over to say hello. I said "hey do a trick" he's like wha, uh, what? I said I knew he was a magician. I gave him a few D'LITES and he was really stoked! I showed him some coin stuff I was working on and we had a nice little chit chat. He was really nice and down to earth, we spoke for a few more minutes and then he went to his seat.
I sure you already have, but if not, you owe it to yourself to see him perform Palingenesia! |

Come on guys, remember that the dude became a doctor when he was like 12 years old... he can probably do magic with his eyes closed.
