I came up with this whilst in bed around 3 AM. I haven't tried it so I'm unsure if it will work. Take your appearing cane and tie the string from a party popper to it, now when you relase the catch you will produce streamers and a bang which will hide the notorious swoosh sound as the cane opens

I'll go out and get some poppers and try it. If you try it before me. Let me know how it looks. Smile

I remember reading this before. Have you posted the idea in the past?

One thing I may point out is you would have to use a metal cane, as they are faster. I am not convinced a Fantasio would have enough power to pop the party popper.

Nice idea though, for anyone who uses metal canes!

Well, when you are up at 3 am thinking of effects, then it is no wonder he loses track of previous posts! Smile

I tried it before but it won't pop... the power of the appearing cane is not power enough to get the party popper to pop...

hmm...

any idea why?

You were using a metal cane Symmatrix?

If a metal cane won' pop the popper, no cane will. They are the fastest appearing ones.

The effect sounds wonderful and is probably pleasing to the eye.

How else could this be done. Can the popper be pre-pulled a tad? Is there some other way to produce the same effect?

Some food for thought.Smile

I don't think there is any way to 'loosen' a popper, and if the metal cane isn't strong enough to pop it, the fantasio one certainly won't be.

Maybe while the cane is prepared with the popper attached, just before you flip the lock with your thumb, your other fingers could pull the streamer away. So the streamer pops, then the cane appears.

It wouldn't be as nice as the original idea, but maybe it isn't possible.

Thanks guys, I did post this awhile back but I thought no one had seen it. I recently cut open a popper and just got the snapper, it just about worked but there was no streamers Smile but anyway let's all keep experimenting, some pro-magician might slip this into their next routine (hint, hint, Mr. Burton) anyway, guys keep posting here with any new cane ideas you have!

Thank you

This is an interesting idea, Tom.
I'm going to get some of those poppers and mess around with it. There may be some way to trip the release or loosen it so that the cane can do the work. Could be a flashy cane production if anyone can find a way to release the popper automatically with the cane.

Now, your comment about "the notorious swoosh sound" that the cane makes reminded me that there are ways to get around that simply by the handling. If you've seen Dale Salwak or Jeff McBride do the appearing cane then notice how they handle it so that the silk sort of just
"melts" into the cane. They don't let the cane snap out in one hand, but use both hands to control the speed. It is still a fast transformation from silk to cane, but without the "swoosh".

You have to work on the timing so it's just right. IF you are too timid or go too slow it will be obvious what is happening. Too fast and you get a "swoosh" sound. Somewhere in between fast and slow release you will get a pleasing effect of silk melting into a cane.

McBride shows the handling in his McBride On Stage video series. (I think it's in Vol. 1)

It is Volume 3, I am certain.

Also, I have found you can use a larger silk when doing the transformation when rubbing the silk between your hand, there isn't as much need for the cane to 'yank' in the silk.
