This one looks like a new idea in moving holes effect. The demo video looks very good. Has anyone noticed this one? Comparing this with Michael Close's The Pothole Trick and R. Paul Wilson's Unholy Gathering, this one looks like a trick photography.
Even Jay Sankey is raving about it.... Effect 4 holes are in each corner of the card. And with his two fingers the magician moves the hole one by one. After that, 4 holes are all in the same corner… It's amazing ! It's like with coins, but with a playing card…Why nobody thinks this idea before! Description: - A really good production quality for this card – perfect gimmick - You can show it to the spectator, flash the back card, make a change and give the card to the spectator - 3 cards and a DVD explanation – 1 gimmick and 2 examinable cards "Have you seen this card?? It's Incredible!" "The best gimmick since very long!" "After Numberground, the new Mickael Chatelain's effect!" : SFP Jay Sankey in FFAP congress : "It's amazing, so perfect, so slim,...really really good!" Didn't look that impressive to me and especially not at that price.

Okay, where do you find an audience that does not give you "the look" while being too polite to ask why you keep picking up the deck just to turn over a card?
...to all the coins I've dropped here

I have Matrix and it has been getting awesome reactions!!
IMHO, it is better than Close's and Wilson's versions. |

I have never been asked why do you go back to the deck. I use a small amount of cards (10) in the deck so it looks not as fishy. They are stunned when you move the holes.
The first time I show the back from the un-gimmicked card and then I turn the card face up on the small packet of cards. This is when I mention the face of the card. This is when I execute the double. At the end, I ask them for the name of the card and I have already executed the final double. I'm giving the card back just as they mention the name of the card. As long as you justify your actions, they will go un-noticed most of the time. |

What is a good effect is always subjective. It just seems like too much $$$ for a gimmicked card in my opinion. It is also difficult (impossible maybe?) for magi to look at demos like a laymen. We all know what he does when he goes back to the deck before handing out the card because we know what to look for, but would a laymen?

Im current working on an Ortiz effect where you do a certain packet count with the deck in your hand. He says that you could set the deck down but then you would have no motivation for picking it back up. If Mr. Ortiz thinks that its an important enough point then so do I. All that aside, I really don't think the price is justified in this one at all. I am essentially a layman when it comes to the moving hole matrix because I have never learned any of them. This looks no better than the previous ones to my eye. |

I wonder who originated this trick?
I know that Michael Webber has done some work with moving holes as has Michael Close. The first time I saw a hole matrix with a playing card was by Paul Wilson. Paul's handling looked cleaner than this video. My problem with this hole matrix effect is the premise. It seems like one of those things you do just because you can. I do a moving hole card trick that was taught to me by Dean Dill. It's not published. Dean worked out a great premise and then hanlding is really clean. I perform it regularly and believe me it really really kills. It's premise is very entertaining and the spectator gets to participate! one of my strongest close-up effects.
Mediocrity is greatly under rated!

Closes's The Pothole Trick is still a classic and it's so timeless - here's a demo from Micheal himself -
http://www.internationalmagicians.com/michael_close.html Nonetheless, the Matrix is also a different effect by itself...

Paul's handling looked cleaner than this video. I'm not too keen on this Chatelain's version - I'm sure the gimmick is very well-made, but this is just a type of effect that any reasonably intelligent spectator have to conclude there is a gimmick in play, and the trick is just to not get caught. R. Paul Wilson's Unholy Gathering was the version I use, and I absolutely fell in love with this kind of effect. It's just so much fun to do! I use Wilson's principle for just about anything in my pocket, including a variety of miniature map-cards (for their complex patterns on the front). My storyline is to show a hole-punch, and tell my spectator it's a new imported "hole-dispenser" - then I playfully ask them to dispense a hole which I put into the card I'm still working on making the ending clean by being able to hand them a card with one hole; it's abit tricky with no possibility of top-changes. I'd love to hear other presentations. |

It's in Knock em' Dead (circa 2002/2003). There are many very nice effects in there.

It seems that with Paul Wilson's Unholy Gathering the card can be signed and given away? But not with Matrix, right? Is there anyone who can compare all the popular versions of this effect?
