I have seen a lot of salt pour routines, but all of them were music-based. The act was performed with a background music.
Has anybody done a salt pour without music? How do you present it as a talking act? Any suggestions? Thanks! |

How about humming? If you do comedy, that could fit and add a bit of business. I do something similar with my snake basket routine - he gets a different tune to each card rise - and it goes over very well.

If you present this as a talking bit without music, you just have to use your imagination a bit more. You have to open up your mind and figure out how to keep it entertaining.
The problem with doing it without music is one in which you have this dead time as the salt is pouring. You need to kill this dead time with either patter or pantomime or something to keep the attention and build the entertainment value up. I believe Paul Kozak (sp) does the salt our mainly with patter. I could be wrong about this as it has been a while since I have seen him perform it. Kyle

Thanks, Mark and Kyle!
Kyle, Kozak does his salt pour with action-packed music entitled "Tequila." I saw his act in youtube. Doing salt pour without music is indeed very challenging! ONY |

Thanks for letting me know Ony. I had seem him do it years ago and was never sure. I think one could do it without music but I would think it would rely a lot on good patter and scripting. I think it would also have to play up on comedy perhaps and delivering comical lines periodically as the salt is pouring out.

I believe Benson used a Drum beat as he poured to emphasize the time, with out music leading your audience in a slow clap that becomes faster would provide an excellent climax, keep your audience awake and involved! You can lead them simply by stamping your foot.

Reed McClintock just lectured for us Friday and he does a wonderful Salt Pour called "Sands of Time" without music. He has a great presentation that has a nice audience hook and ends in a splashy way.
It's available in the East Coast Magic Salt Pour instructions. http://www.blakeseastcoastmagic.com Ben S

Hi Ony:
Music is definitely not required for the salt trick. The effect is pretty straight forward, a handful of salt travels from one hand to another. Take for instance Emil Jarrow, when he did the tobacco trick, it was done with just patter (as far as I can tell). If you want to be funny about it, you could make the salt reappear in the other hand and then continue talking about your next trick as the salt keeps pouring from you fist onto the floor. If you choose to the salt trick as a finale to your act, then that is another thing. Because the music helps build the trick to a crescendo that can lead to a big bow. I have performed the salt trick without music a few times and the effect is solid and can stand on its own (without music) as a good magic trick! Levent

To say there is dead time when you are producing salt streaming from your fist seems to me that you do not understand entertainment. It is your job to entertain and that is what you are doing. Something is happening, you are producing salt that had vanished.
Some performers can act and some cannot. Do what is comfortable for your personality. Mike Finney is not contantly talking and joking, he is using facial looks and timing to create the humor and interact with the spectator and audience. It is a concept that should be learned. It is your job to bring the party and keep it going and exciting so they have a once in a life time experience. |

Very true wmhegbli. That is the part that is missing from 99% of all magic acts.
Almost all magicians are relying on the tricks to fill their acts. it's not the tricks! It's YOU!

Comedy begins in the Feet...but the face does have it's function..
From salt to salt substitute...similar to the old joke about the sugar comes back as Splenda.... Then produce a blood pressure cup..(automatic...easier to use on stage...) Latest bit in my act my favorite brother... the vegie burger & 200 mile bike rider who is the proud owner of 3 stints... Besides the magic and it being YOU...it is also them...seeing themselves in you..aka Everyman....

I tried the salt pour without music last weekend in my 3 shows and I found it even easier because you are explaining what you are doing. Misdirection is even better with patter.
