I do a "cute" snake basket routine that goes over well with teens and adults, so I think I see what Regal had in mind, but it sure didn't work out that way. Generally, I've been surprised Regal hasn't been stronger, as he is one of my favorite scripters in magic.

I think they have some props that they have to use and choose from. And in this case the duck might have been the best or only choose for him.

I wrote a three-part behind the scenes series of articles for GENII on the show (Part One was in the April issue with the Hooker Card Rise, Part Two will be in the June issue). I cover a lot of what you mention in the articles, but they were written before seeing the episodes on TV.
In general, yes, the magic performances are shortened/edited for TV, as is inevitable. The general idea for the duck was to approach the audience in the manner Chris Capeheart approaches an adult audience with Fraidy Cat Rabbit (he does a great job with it). So, there was lots of business that was cut out, as you can tell - if you notice, on TV the blindfold suddenly "appears" on the duck. The experience was interesting and emotional on many levels, and it only grew in intensity as it the show went on. The show became an exercise in fashioning magic for specific individuals. Success and failure was often linked to that, but there were also some heartbreaks. I am seeing the shows for the first time, and this last episode was easily the best thus far - very funny and entertaining. Go to http://www.VH1.com, click on the "Celebracadabra" page and go to the extra footage labeled "Struggling on the Street." You'll laugh. By the series' end, there was new respect for magic all around - I'm pretty sure it will have the same effect on the viewing audience. |

I have seen variations of the mental trick Tommy did with the CD's but I have not been able to come across it in any of my literature...or I have missed it all together. Can any one tell me what this routine is called. Basically, with the magicians back turned and person is asked to put several objects in different pockets and the magi correctly states each one. What is this and where can I get some info on it.
Thanks and sorry for the slightly off topic post.... Dorian

That DVD trick is a variant of Stephen Tucker's "Vi$a Cabaret," with a bit of the method changed. It is in my new book Approaching Magic entitled "Porn in Your Pants." The kicker is what makes this trick - after the spectator places three items in different pockets and the performer correctly identifies what's where...he then reveals a prediction that was in full view from the beginning, back to audience or in an envelope, that correctly states where each item was placed. NO OUTS. For those concerned, the trick doesn't have to be done with a dirty DVD! |

I thought I would chime in here too.
Glad you guys are watching the show. Like David Regal, I am seeing them for the first time as you do. Before we started shooting we made a list of tricks we wanted to do in each venue. I had a list of tricks planned for Comedy. But, as you now know, the day before I was to teach Lisa the act, they punished us with not being able to talk. So I had to scrap my whole planned act (talking) and come up with a new act, including the routine and the tricks themselves, and have that stuff delivered within 12 hours. Then I had to teach her and rehearse. And that is one reason we didn't do very well in that challenge. That was a tough one. We worked very hard for a long time on this show. There is so much you don't know regarding the nuts and bolts. I recommend you read David Regal's articles to learn everything! Keep watching! David Kaye / Silly Billy

Thanks David Regal.... must be a bit of ESP going on because that book was on my next "to buy" list. By the way...is "What's My Bag" in the book too.....that was great.......and funny.
David Kaye, your awesome.....part of me wants you to keep getting the challenges just to see what you come up with. I hope we get to me one day, perhaps Atlanta in August. Take care all, Dorian

Really nice of you guys to chime in and share some of the off-camera grit. The show has far exceeded my expectations. I wasn't sure how many layfolk were watching until a party this past Saturday. I totally screwed up a favorite bit and adlibbed, "Hey, if I was good I'd be on VH1!" It got a great laugh and several people came up after the show to ask me what I thought of Celebracadabra. They're watching and they get it! Thanks, guys!

The "What's My Bag" game show is viewable only on the Celebracadabra web site as "additional footage," and they omitted the set-up: earlier in the act Tommy mentions that he misplaced his watch. Makes better sense now, yes? The trick is presentation of Max Maven's "Just Chintz" from his DVD set Nothing. It's one of my favorite tricks of his, and that's saying a lot as he's put out so much great material. David P.S. I will take credit for one of the prize options: The "What's My Bag" home game. |

I am enjoying the show myself. I hope to see more of these type of shows in the future. One of the thing that I am seen it do is spark interest in the magic for some. That is always a good thing.
It was funny when one of them referred to David as one pisted off clown. I was rolling as they cut to David just steaming. I am looking forward to seeing it next week.

I've been getting into this, so I'll share my thoughts.
I can't stand so-called reality TV, but I am enjoying Celebracadabra quite a bit and always look forward to the next show. I'm not sure how lay people view it, but for magicians there is so much to like. The stars for us, of course, are the magicians. I was psyched when I saw David Regal, Rocco, and David Kaye step on stage in the first episode. I think Hal and Kimberly have the best shot at winning, though I like Tommy and he seems to be really into it. Tommy needs to avoid any more "Pete Townsend" outbreaks. Hal seems to have a knack for magic. He improvised well at the end of his lime from mouth routine after dropping one of the limes. Kimberly looks confident and can work a crowd. Her mentor is doing a good job coming up with her routines that fit her really well. Poor Lisa. That's all I can say. I don't know why they are targeting her because I think there are bigger threats for the title. I'd like to see Max lighten up a bit. He can be funny but he's coming across as the Simon Cowell heavy here. Maybe that's the point. Anyway, I love the show and I'd really like to see more of the behind the scenes footage. |

I will add one more thing. Next week is a good episode (walkaround). But the week after I think we all do our best work (Cabaret). Even the person who gets kicked off does an amazing show. This is the one we performed on the Palace stage in the Castle. Big surprises and great magic. Watch for it!

I managed to download a copy of episode 1 and 2 but haven't been able to find 3. Don't suppose someone can get a copy for me somehow? |

So can someone please clarify - do the coaches have the option of any effect or are they limited or pre-chosen in some way?
The reason I ask is because some of the choices have been surprising to me. Besides the duck for the college crowd, Murray gave a Blendo to his student for walk around! Not that these tricks couldn't work, but when there is sooooo much good material out there, why make the contestants "sell" something not intended for that venue? Love the show overall, by the way, but I could probably do without the theme song. Thanks for posting here Mr. Regal and Mr. Kaye! |

Last night's episode seemed to show a lot more magic!
Of course "the clown" (Billy) continues to be butt of everyone's jokes. Did it all get on your nerves David, or did you have a great time overall?
