Hey, I've never posted in this part of the forum before, but I was wondering if any of you guys (and gals) practice any kind of martial arts, especially karate. I practiced Shoto-kan for about 10 years before I moved and ended up stopping completely. Post your martial-arts "bio." Also, this isn't really for "fighters" who I tend to see as practitioners of a sport instead of an art.
Also, ONE HUNDREDTH POST!!!!!!!!!! :dancing: :bluebikes:

I studied briefly Kenpo Karate and 5 Animals Kung Fu when I was a teenager.
For the past few years, I have been studying Wing Chun Kung Fu (Grandmaster is William Cheung, Bruce Lee's friend and mentor who introduced Bruce into Wing Chun, later the foundation of his Jeet Kune Do) |

My dad hired a private tutor to teach me Ninjutsu when I was a kid - yes, that makes me a ninja. I went through that for about ten years before my teacher told me there was nothing more I could learn from him.
Think inside the box. . . it's less crowded.

I'm a Black belt in Hae Dong Gum Do, a Korean swordfighting martial art. It's sounds pretty hardcore until you realize that there's no sparring -- it's all forms. You basically dance with a wooden sword long enough, and they throw a black belt at you. It doesn't hurt that they get a kick out of seeing white guys do it over there.
Needless to say, it's one of my most prized possessions. Plus, I can actually use it to buy an honest-to-goodness samurai sword if I wanted to. Not that I would. Those things are dangerous. |

Great to meet other Martial Artists here....
I did Tae Kwan Do first, 1st. Dan.. Then moved on to Silat, my Malaysian Martial Art, Junior Instructor only.... Then got into the Jeet Kune Do movement which brought me into Brazilian Jiujitsu and also Filipino Kali, mainly the knifefighting, which I still practice to this day.... Now thinking of doing Karate and brushing up on the BJJ.... Still train knife on the side.... I find it fun.... Anyone else still train?

I wish I could, but my school is away from my karate school and my karate teacher does an "Americanized" version of Shoto-kan that is very different from the styles that follow the more traditional and strict Japanese version. I prefer the newer one because it is more free-form and allows the practitioner to change his style when he finds a more effective technique. I tried to find a school up near my university, but there are only strict-style schools and I just couldn't get into it.
Hopefully I will one day find something else that is both close by and similar to what I know.

I was always terrible in competitions....I'm much more of a teacher, that is what I spent most of my advanced belt years working on.

I'm against Karate and any other similar types of violence.
I prefer the types of violence where the other party is not aware that there will be any violence. Martial arts kinds of projects your intentions (Unless you kick them from behind at night, when they are in bed).
Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.
