Well not exactly. but Congress is looking at making coins from steel. Currently a penny costs 1.26 cents to make, and a nickel costs 7.7 cents to make; so pennies may go back to being made of steel just as in the 1940's. Will this trend lead to steel quarters and halves as well? Who knows what tricks our lawmakers have in mind.
Certainly will put a damper on those who mfg steel core coins and magnetic coins as well. WIll this make the machining of gaff coins easier/ less costly? KOtah |

Great, now I wont be able to say "Coins aren't magnetic" when someone suspects I am using a magnet to vanish a coin.

I've been hearing this for a while. The thing is that even though a penny may cost over one cent, that same penny is going to be used in many more than just one purchase. If all coins were only used once, the cost would be an issue. Since they're used dozens, if not hundreds and thousands of times, they easily justify their cost.

Yeah silver coins would do. It's not even that big of a deal lol. I think I've only heard people say that once or twice. Both times I was using sleeves.

I doubt if this will get very far. The cost of modifying all the vending machines that currently reject magnetic coins will very likely be a major consideration.
It might happen with pennies, but I don't think it will get much further than that.

Here in Canada, all coins have some steel in them and are therefore attracted my magnets. Vending machines do not have to be altered. The coins themselves are not magnets.
Actually, having coins that are magnets can attract create a number of possibilities for a magician utilizing a PK ring, Raven, Bat etc. I've always appreciated that I don't have to spend extra money on steel core coins. Werner |

Werner,
When I referred to "magnetic coins", I wasn't saying the coins contained magnets, it was just easier to say than "coins containing ferrous metals". I assumed (evidently incorrectly) that this would be understood. While Canadian vending machines accept ferrous metal coins, US machines do not. They use magnets to detect, and reject, slugs as well as foreign coins (The rejecting devices also detect coins that are grossly different in weight than the appropriate US coins). There are hundreds of thousands of coin operated devices in the US that WOULD have to be modified. The modification in most cases would be fairly simple, but it would have to be done, nonetheless. This would require massive amounts of man-hours to be spent and thousands of gallons of $4/gallon fuel to be burned driving around doing it. I just don't believe any politician in his right mind would support this.
Woke up.

When I was in ecuador some years ago they were still in the process of dollarizing their economy and I got a hold of as much of their local coinage as possible. was all magnetic. it has made for some amazing magic over the years!! if you wanted too you could always go through the trouble of painting 1943 dated pennies. but that seems like a lot of work for something like that.

Does anyone know if there IS such a thing as a 'magnet coin' out there at the moment?.That is to say NOT a 'magnetic coin' but a normal looking regular currency coin (dollar, euro or sterling) which has built inside it a very strong neo type magnet? I am already aware of Outlaw's 'Relic' but what I really want is to just be able to take a coin out of my pocket hand it to the spectator and perform an effect such as guessing which hand it is in using a gadget such as 'Equinox.I am guessing that normal coins might well be too thin for a sufficiently strong magnet.
Can anyone please clarify for me?.Thanks. |

Chazpro makes a magnetic (magnet in it, not steel core) Kennedy half and I think they have quarters as well,

Thanks Tpax.I will check out Chazpro.Ideally I am looking at Sterling currency as I am British but a Kennedy half would be interesting and regular enough to allay any suspicion.
