So, I wear a small pouch on my hip during my entire performance (as opposed to putting it on just for the finale)
I wear this pouch for each of my 3 routines...loaded with different things for each routine...obviously. For one routine it holds my misers dream coins, a bit of rope, and some sponge balls. For a different routine it's a basic cups and balls set up. For the third routine there's stuff for a "bill to impossible location" effect. Bottom line is, I'm constantly working near the edge and I don't want the punters peeking into my gib. So, what do I do? I cover the opening with a cotton hanky...or pull the leather draws in tight...but both have their drawbacks: lack of accessibility....which causes me to fumble about. So what do you all prefer to do as a means of hiding your goodies from lurking eyes? Do you even bother to cover the opening? Is it something that I'm making too big of a deal outta? What kinda pouches are you all using? Do they have any special "content concealing" bells & whistles? Are there any pouches out there that'll allow the busker to comfortably get closer to the edge WITHOUT feeling like you're about to give away the farm? |

I have a small dark towel I keep across the top of the contents, especially the final loads for Cups and Balls. It doesn't really get in the way of anything, and when the time comes, I just wipe my hands and drop it on my duffle bag under the table, leaving me ready to go.
FYI, I use Frank's "Cellini" pouch. It has the look of two compartments and I just keep the stuff I want hidden on one side with the towel. The rest of the stuff I don't care if they see it or not.

A loose jacket or vest would do the trick.

I wear my pouch my whole show and have made the decision that it does not matter who see's in.
Yes some will see in. But not all. And of those people that see in a even smaller % are going to be able to put 2 and 2 together. that's just my thoughs. Shawn.

Thanks for the thoughts all!
Hey Dave, how's the Cellini pouch for the the cups and balls? I think I saw Tom Frank perform with it once on a YouTube clip. I've been thinking about picking up one of them...just to see if it works for me better than the 2 other pouches I'm using. Now I hear the Jimmy Talksalot actually has one a prototype and may be selling one. So, I'll probably wait until I've seen a pick of that before making up my mind. Shawn. I agree with you about the low percentage of people actually making the connection...but I've had one guy make noise about seeing "those balls" in my pouch...and that was enough to cause me to stumble a bit right before my final hat lines. I just wanna make certain that I'm doing everything I can to offer a good, tight magic show that's full of wonder. That's all. What kind of pouch do you use Shawn? Anyone making their own pouches out there? I'd be interested in hearing from you all! |

Hey I hear there's a company that sells all of these pouches and a number of other things.
Some guy named Frank I think...
I am truly blessed to have a job where people are laughing all the time and everyone believes in magic....Come to think of it, I'm blessed to even have a job.

Chad,
It works great! Not as stiff as Gazzo's but then again I don't plan on using six oranges and a melon either so it doesn't really matter to me. I like the wide profile better than the single pocket varieties. Since it only looks like a two section bag, I can reach in with my right hand and flick things over to the left side for retrieval later.

I wear mine the whole time. I have never worried about people peeking. It is full of many things so figuring out what is what is no easy task.
At the end of my cups and balls routine I put my loads into the pouch. If anyone wanted to stick around they would know where they come from. The magic is in the misdirection of the moment, not in not knowing where the props come from. We magicians know where loads are coming from and we can still be fooled badly.

I just got one in the mail 3 days ago.
It's made by that Starsini guy. On the outside chance this post isn't edited or deleted, let me say for the record that the workmanship is superb and the price is half what it could be. Oh yeah, and he sounds like a little girl on the phone, but don't tell him I said so. |

I just finished a day of 10 shows. Today I switched to a front pouch that was given to me by a friend. Normally I'm wearing a smaller side pouch and using my front pockets more.
I really liked the front pouch. Never have before today for effects other than the cups and balls...but now I'm thinking that I'll stick with it. I kept the tabs pulled in tight and just left enough room to get one hand in. Probably if I stick with this manner of pouch usage, I'll put a button snap in the middle and let the side straps out loose...kinda Cellini-ish. Or I'll just buy a Cellini pouch...and have a full collection! Hey, some people collect cups don't they?!? ...wait, what am I saying...I got 6 sets of cups... No wonder my wife hates magic. |

Chad, "Hey, some people collect cups don't they?!? ...wait, what am I saying...I got 6 sets of cups... No wonder my wife hates magic." Today I bought a set of juggling clubs. My wife says "Why are you wasting your money on that stuff" or words of that sort. Well, Im 65 and one day I'll retire and then I won't have so much money to spend, that's one reason why I buy stuff now. Anyway, I answered - and at 65 I think its an appropriate answer - "Everything I do at my age is exercise". Whether it's doing a cut and restored rope trick, juggling, even shuffling a pack of cards. Exercise that's enjoyable! Don't you just love it when you can feel your fingers moving ropes, or cards or whatever, like the moves are under your delicate control?
The presentation makes the magic.

I agree sch.
So, will you busk with these clubs? I use club juggling and balloon twisting in my main show. It's a magic show (mostly) but I've added every corner of my entertaining personality into the show. That way, I've got just barely enough original stuff to make it a proper length to pay out. After I bought Nick Nicholas's promo DVD off his website (for 10 bucks...are you mad Nick?!?!?) I realised that a busking show can be more than just cards, coins and cups. I don't know how far New Zealand actually is from Australia, but the shipping can't be too too bad. If you've not seen Nick work, then google his site and grab that DVD. He's got a club juggling act on it...like I said, he mustn't be all there to give that all away for 10 bucks. He is a street performing GENIOUS though. He should be selling that DVD for $50 to performers. |

I hear what your saying Chad... I have had people tipp that they had seen my loads after the reveal.. I have just grown accustom to a certain amount of that.
I'm not gonna please all of the people all of the time... but I can see how you would want to avoid that.. I have a couple of Franks Pouches from the Ambit. Card. one of them is a standard busker the other one I had special ordered to my specs.. Franks a great guy and does great custom work... I love his pouches and highly recommend... I love floor. Shawn.

Gary Animal just posted on a different forum something to the effect that 'good products won't make you a great performer...but plastic drink cups and tool pouches will make you a lousy one'
Those weren't his exact words, but I think that was the spirit of the post (too lazy to search for it...Dave V prolly knows when & where!) I couldn't agree more with that thought. I started with a modified shoulder bag and Jeep hub covers. They got the job done perhaps, but I really had no idea what doing a real show was supposed to feel like (or a decent hat for that matter). Looking like a pro, feeling like a pro, and offering the punters a professional show close enough to them that they can make eye contact with you - that's what it's all about. That's my drug of choice. |

I still hate the whole pouch thing. good thing I'm not a professional busker I guess. just seems to take some of the mystery out of it. don't beat me =D

I won't beat ya Josh. Tomorrow at dinner I WILL stick ya in my pouch though.
Don't worry, I think there's still some bits of kiwi in the corner from back when it was Bobby's pouch...you won't go hungry. After that I may have to start callin' ya Joey BTW. ...(The Aussies had ought to appreciate that one ) |
