Ah shucks. Forgive me for misunderstanding. Incidentally, in looking back on your post and mention of Fantasio products and other's chat about multiplying candles, it's ironic that Fantasio never offered a set of multiplying candles. None that I know of.
I understand you are not comfortable with the candlesticks and that's fine. No need for bragging chat on that subject. If the character and act lends itself to the owen set then go for it! I know you are interested in developing reasons for their use within the act. I know I've analyzed every second of my manipulation act and can tell you there comes a point where, if the act flows, you shouldn't spend too much time in the deep waters of rationalizing every breathe you take. That's left to the armchair magicians right? Right. I'm already sick of hearing so many amateurs and pros alike talk about logical reasons for anything happening on stage. I feel if you spend too much time in that arena you could mirco-rationalize to the point where you can't even justify walking on stage. So find the character or theme, be done with that part of it, and enjoy development of the act. Your interest and foresight in using the candles is far more than half the battle in justifying their introduction. I'm sure you'll think of something. |

What is your reason for having anything to produce in a theater. A theater does not provide a reason for anything except a sheltered stage. The only reason I think of for a stage is for people to stand elevated in front of a group of your peers. Anyway, the reason I use the candles, is because of the magic and the audience. It is much like burning cigarettes. The candle end is on fire, and that draws the impossibility of hiding, controlling, and manipulating the candle. When I first started to use candles, the audiences reactions were very surprising to me. They would gasp, yell out that I was dripping wax on their carpet, and shocked at the candles multiplying. In one word it was magic to them. You stated, "it is also pretty much impossible to work these things like lance". It is not impossible if you seek the information. Lance Burton used information that is in print now, in all the Fantasio books. He then added his own way to conceal and make multiply steals for his productions. Basic handling of the candles are in print. As with any device, some creative thinking can be added. True, he has taken it to a new level, as I never gave any thought to multiply steals. Once you learn the basics of controlling, stealing, and smoothness, the next phase can be accomplished. As it has been said, "a person cannot run before he can walk". David Ginn wrote 5 book on the Fantasio Products. Fantasio has a hard bound book published as well. I have to say it one more time, through practice and rehearsal comes creativity. Thinking can only go so far, then you have to actually do the physical work. Studying your own mannerisms as well will help reveal how you naturally move and gesture. These moves and gestures can be used to your advantage. |

I believe there is footage of him doing the multiplying candles at the top of a "You Asked for It" show. I know there is footage of him but I don't remember if the candle were in it.

I just heard from a mutual friend that indeed it was on the You asked for it series. I'll be looking for it.
The footage I'd love to see is Aubrey doing all his manipulation: Cards, Billiards, and Candles on a TV show that aired circa 1974-74 with a name such as "Like Vaudeville". It aired in the summer and had a lot of acts that were LA based. I know that Aubrey came out of retirement (from magic) to do an "It's Magic" show for Milt Larsen...and this was around that time. he was great in it!

Hello,
I got a question. Is Loyd's Candles,Owen Candles, and Tim Star Candles work the same? |

Owen's took over the making of the candles, but added an additional feature so the candle will not go out when being manipulated. I would contact Dimmare or Pete Biro for an original Lloyd set if this is the way you are leaning. Tim Star's - Star Candles are somewhat different in construction and working. I think they are superior to Lloyd's candles. |

Thanks, sam2452. That's exactly what I was going to ask. I knew either Bill or Pete would have the answer. I was leaning toward getting the Star Candles.
Bill, in your opinion, make the Tim Star candles better?
